ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an assault in Conder yesterday morning (Tuesday, December 11).

Around 9am, a 14-year-old girl was walking along Heidelberg Street near the Vikings Club when she was approached by a man.

The man spoke to the girl before grabbing her left arm. She broke free, hit the man across his face and ran away. She was unharmed in the incident.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s with a muscular build, closely shaved hair and clean-shaven. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black skinny jeans and spoke with a strong Australian accent.

Anyone who witnessed the incident yesterday morning in Conder, or can assist police in identifying the man described above is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

This girl has handled the situation wisely and safely.

There was a similar incident in a shopping centre this week involving a young 20’s woman; the male had a different description, fortunately the woman got to her vehicle and locked the doors.

My suggestion after having raised children, now grown up, is if at all possible ‘safety in numbers’, no side streets or bike tracks, children walking to school different ways and not the same route, walking away from the roads, on the footpaths closest to the homes in the event a child needs to run into a home getting away from a Kidnapper. Walking to school between more of a safest period of 8.20am – 8.45am (9am many parents have disappeared for work, buses have done their runs and most children at the school by 8.50am).

Teach your child to scream in order to put off the Abductor, fight then and there, (too late if put into the vehicle 8 times out of ten) I state this, as there have been tuggeranong based victims who were released after an assault (they could easily have been murdered). A girl in Richardson, a young girl in Theodore under the viaduct, a woman in her 40’s on Pocket Avenue driven away by men and later released and others most in all probability never made print.

I am sorry to say the following and it may offend people (not the parents though), teach your child if ever a bloke has grabbed them, to use their middle finger aiming for their eye, particularly girls with nails. The D.N.A. of the Abductor may be captured under the victim’s nail(s). Forget about the legal aspect, these are children.

If there is time, an Impulse spray can sat daily inside their bag on top of their books, without the lid, for a quick grab to spray into the Assailant’s eyes.

I hope she got the nails in, makes identification later easier.
