A 27-year-old Bonython man was arrested overnight for spraying graffiti on a number of businesses in the City area.

About 12.15am this morning (Friday, August 9), a member in Police Operations observed a man on CCTV writing graffiti on a store on Bunda Street.

Members from City Police Station were radioed about the incident while the Operations member continued to watch the man on CCTV, providing attending police with his exact location.

The man was arrested and transported to the ACT Watch House. He was released a short time later when his identity was confirmed. He will be summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

North District Superintendent Brett Kidner said the CCTV cameras are a valuable tool in the fight against crime in the CBD.

“With ACT Policing Operations members monitoring the CCTV cameras throughout the city, our chances of apprehending offenders in a timely fashion is greatly increased. This incident is a perfect example of the benefits this technology offers,” Superintendent Kidner said.

“These cameras are a great investment for one of Canberra’s most densely populated areas, both in a residential and commercial sense. This matter should act as a deterrent to others who might consider committing criminal offences in Civic”.

Any chance of a name being released?

Given the age & area that they’re from, I’m reasonably confident I’ll at least know of the person involved.

What will the courts do, you ask? Sadly, we must presume they’ll settle on an alternative to breaking both thumbs. After hearing evidence from all the experts, they’ll probably buy him some paint.

And give him compensation for mental anguish at having his art disparaged.

OMG – “27”. This sick puppy seriously needs to get a life!!!

Fully agree, how lame for a bloke to behave like a child. He can obviously use a spray can, why not put him to task on the big orange bridge in Tuggeranong and only supply orange paint?

Sounds akin to getting hackers to work for the government in data gathering/cyber warfare?

At least such an outcome would result in him spending government revenues on productive pursuits rather than policing/courts/gaol.

For every idiot the coppers have to chase on minor matters resources are directed away from more important areas where they are sorely needed.

Any chance of getting some cameras in around Watson shops?

Is this the first person caught due to the CCTVs?

CCTV is an excellent tool to monitor and crackdown on idiotic behaviour. More cameras pls Simon!

Now this will be interesting. What will the courts do ?

You don’t realise how much graffiti is around on our fences and such untill you have been away. Hell people put down Queanbeyan; but it’s clean ( actually Queanbeyan is lookin better to live every day; or Googong or Tralee, when it gets going )
I spend a little time in Wangarrata, and commented to the motel owner some years ago how there was no graffiti; unlike Canberra. She mentioned how a bloke was caught doing over stores in the main street, and he ended up in the can.
