Celebrating the Hundred Days

“The Hundred Days” is best known as the period between Napoleon’s return from exile and his Old Guard breaking at Waterloo. (Although the phrase also has other less catastrophic historical antecedents.)

The increasingly Napoleonic Jon Stanhope has announced that celebrations may commence to mark his own Hundred Days since he dragged his shattered troops back into the corridors of power.

“ACT Labor has focused its first 100 days in government on building a better city and a stronger community through delivering on its election commitments and investing responsibly in the community to protect jobs, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said today.

Mr Stanhope said he was proud of his government’s achievements since returning to office last November, which include work on three new operating theatres, a $3.5 million welfare package and the opening of the $45 million Kingsford Smith School.”

So Rioters, before the Prussians arrive, what have been the highlights for you of les Cent Jours?

UPDATED: Zed “Blücher” Seselja is celebrating another victory on the floor of the Assembly:

“The Chief Minister, Jon Stanhope, suffered yet another humiliating defeat in the ACT legislative Assembly today as his motion in support of Kevin Rudd’s stimulus package was voted down by the Liberal Opposition with the support of the Greens”

JB, Comparing Zed to Blucher is rather generous of you. I see him more as a Prince of Orange, who’s complete ineptitude nearly lost it for Wellington or Gneisenau, Bluchers CoS, who did his utmost to prevent the Russians from reaching Waterloo in time to watch Napoleon’s Imperial Guard break and run.

Memo to Zed, an opposition needs to make some noise, otherwise they’re totally irrelevant. Do something, anything… If Stanhope says something, put on your warface and say the opposite, get your dial on the news complaining about the GDE, lack of services, busses, public art, no waste campaigns, bloody anything.

Agreed it’s a long stretch but I didn’t want to get too obscure, and he’s still some way to being a Wellington.

And after all the kickings I’ve given Zed I was feeling generous.

He’s done something since he’s come to office? I haven’t noticed. His motion of “support” again smacks of his arrogance as is his expectation of receiving full support for all his legislation. Hardly surprising it took him less than 100 days to get back into it after getting down on his knees and begging for us not to boot him out. Typically gullible electorate.

I disagree. It’s not as if the majority of Canberrans aren’t already aware how incompetent and arrogant this government is. He doesn’t have to prove that.

What Zed does have to prove is that he is a credible alternative. He’s a smart guy. He needs to show moderation and intelligence, not continue the buffoonery.

Sure.

My business provided ‘product’ directly related to the election campaign of Mike Hettinger (amongst other Labor candidates).

Unfortunately, Labor objected to Hettinger aligning himself with a pro Green stance, and decided to withdraw funding. Same day as we provided product.

I have been given the impression that local Labor froze funds Hettinger had contributed to his own campaign, and that local businesses who are in the same position as myself are whistling in the wind if we expect payment.

Theft, actually.

Hey Jonno,

100 days to pay the bills for the Hettinger election campaign, and you can’t even do that.

And you claim to be acting to promote and help local business.

You really are a mob of miserable, local business crucifying bastards!

Care to elaborate?

The UN Tick of Approval Prison might open in 100 days.

The Greens deciding to back the Libs from time to time just to amuse themselves.

…opening things well before they are operational – kinda akin to Bush’s ‘the war is over, victory is ours’ aircraft carrier-based speech…

Celebrating the birth of “aspirational targets” – the noughties version of “non-core promises”.

Can we whinge about what hasn’t come yet?

*waits for the whinging to begin so I don’t have to go first*
