Chief Minister Gallagher and Mayor Rattenbury have announced the works underway on the Centenary Trail.

Work has commenced on the construction of Canberra’s Centenary Trail – a 150 kilometre self-guided trail for walkers and touring cyclists, announced Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury.

“The much anticipated Centenary Trail aims to showcase Canberra, taking users on a seamless journey between urban and rural environments incorporating the ACT’s iconic and hidden treasures,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“The idea for the $3.3 million project arose from community submissions received in 2009 as part of the Canberra 100 call for Centenary projects.

“Work to construct 18 kilometres of new trail and upgrades to 10 kilometres of existing trail sections started at various locations around Canberra. As part of the project, work will also be done on the Discovery Trail along the Murrumbidgee River to create a more sustainable path alignment from Kambah Pool to the Tuggeranong Town Centre.”

“The Centenary Trail will also include a campsite, located on the northern ACT/NSW border near Oak Hill, and will provide facilities for overnight camping for walkers and cyclists completing the northern section of the trail,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The campsite will include shaded picnic tables, a pit toilet and rain water tank, shade structure for protection from the weather and bike racks. The site will also have plenty of grassy areas suitable for pitching a tent.

“Local company, Makin Trax, which specialises in trail construction for walkers and cyclists in environmentally sensitive areas, has been awarded the construction contract for the trail project. Makin Trax has been involved in other successful projects in the ACT such as the Gibraltar Peak Trail in Tidbinbilla, recognised for excellence in environmental practices at the Master Builders Awards in 2012.

Personally I can’t wait to get some mates and spend a few days doing the trail.

UPDATE: Shane’s office confirm they’re aiming for a late October/early November opening.
