Centenary of Canberra are hoping to hear from ex-Canberrans about why they love Canberra. These stories will be used in a Centenary Project called the Canberra Diaspora.

TV commercials for the Canberra Diaspora go to air on SBS this weekend, featuring former Canberrans from around Australia – and one from the US – reminiscing about the city.

In one of the commercials Amanda Palmer, who now lives in New York and chose the view of the city from Mt Ainslie as her backdrop, says: “This is the best city in the world.”

Artist Greg Pritchard, of Natimuk in Victoria, recalls music gigs at the ANU bar: “I saw people like The Cure – Elvis Costello played for four hours … INXS in their very early days.”

“Canberra is proud of its citizens, but the idea of Canberra is so much larger than just the 358,000 people who live here. The reach of its diaspora is massive,” said Centenary of Canberra Creative Director Robyn Archer when launching the project two years ago.

I think it’d make more sense if ex-Canberrans talked about why they LEFT Canberra.
