TAMS are making it known they’ve busted a pet store for bringing lizards legally in from interstate:

The ACT Government today reminded pet sellers about the legislation surrounding the sale of animals, after a Canberra pet store was issued with a $1,250 infringement notice for being in breach of the Nature Conservation Act 1980 for selling central bearded dragons (Pogona Vitticeps).

“Compliance officers were advised that a local pet store had central bearded dragons available for sale,” Michael Brice, Acting Manager, Licensing and Compliance said.

“Central bearded dragons are a protected native animal under ACT legislation and it is illegal for pet stores in the ACT to sell them.

“The pet store in question imported the lizards from interstate where they are legal to sell, through another store in their franchise.

“The central bearded dragons were seized and the store was issued with an infringement notice for illegally selling a protected native animal and cautioned for importing them into the ACT and keeping them without a license.

“Upon visiting the pet store, our animal licensing officers found that the pet store was also selling Indian ring neck birds, a species for which they did not have a license. The birds can only be sold in the ACT if sellers hold the appropriate licensing to do so. TAMS has since issued a licence to the pet store to sell that species.

“Our licensing officers have worked with the pet store to ensure that all pets sold through the shop are now compliant with the ACT’s legislation.

What happened to the lizard? I hope it wasn’t killed.

Also, there is an awful apostrophe in the first sentence.

R. Murdoch.

As I recall, it was Kerry Packer who was “The Goanna”.

I’m sure you are right. I was referring to JB’s peculiar desire to have any little errors corrected by famous or influential people, that’s all.

Oh Poetix, I wasn’t correcting you. I was drawing some lines between the dots of (deep breath) crimes involving lizards, lizards themselves, goannas, Australian media moguls, perceptions of use and abuse of power, the stylistic mastery of Channel Nine programming and … um … oh look! My bin is about to be collected! Ta tahs!

Not sure the need to buy these when all over canberra there are eastern dragons ripe for plucking out of the wild. Not so keen on caging them, but my parents had a huge pond area and I captured a bunch of easterns that lived a very happy life sun baking and getting over fed by my mother.

Maybe the store purchased and imported them legally, but they were evidently selling them illegally.

I did a double take when JB wrote “busted a pet store for bringing lizards legally in from interstate.”

According to the TAMS document, everything about these lizards are legal (except bestiality, obviously, duh….). But sales of them in the ACT is illegal.

Which is to say that the pet store owner missed the ACT-NSW border by a few kilometres. Otherwise it would have been legit.

more a preference than a desire!

Don’t know why this needs a tongue in cheek caption. Maybe the store purchased and imported them legally, but they were evidently selling them illegally. Not only the dragons but other protected species. So TAMS did the right thing in removing the animals and fining the ignorant store owners. Why anyone would think a bearded dragon is a happier creature when stuck in a glass box in your bedroom, than roaming freely around the slopes of Mt Ainslie is beyond me.

Because I don’t know if the reptilian brain has the capacity for happiness. In fact, it’s a pretty safe bet to say it doesn’t. Mrs Koresh, however, is made much happier by the presence of a lizard in a glass box in her bedroom so it’s win/win. Or at least win/not lose.

I dont think you should sell lizards at all, but I can understand when small business get upset at there being completely different regulations between stores that are perhaps 10km from each other. Yes its all good to say they should know the law, but there are sooo many laws.

See, the power of Murdoch has come to the fore.
