Went to Central Cafe Gungahlin on the 12/09/2008 and felt it let the name down. Have been to Central in Queanbeyan and thoughly enjoyed myself being of firm belief to share round service. Made a booking for 6pm – turned up at 6:05pm to be told table was to be given away. When finally seated our party was not even half way through eating the meal when staff started cleaning up and taking food/plates away. Staff could not take food orders or drinks orders properly and mixed them up. Staff were rude or not interested. Not a good sign when many people walked disgusted

I felt let down and will not be returning – will take my business to Queanbeyan across the border in future

Haha, I missed that comment when this thread first popped up.

I just used the search function now to come on and post that Central Cafe Queanbeyan was sold and the previous owner kept the name and started the Gungahlin cafe.

At least, that’s what I heard on the grapevine today. Presumably this means the Quenbeyan cafe has changed its name???

I’m still dying back here!

Yes it is the people in Redezvous but keep it quiet we don’t want the heathens to spoil our secrets now do we—–, they are the peolpe that started the original Central cafe

I still want to know if the old Central Cafe owners are the ones I buy my lunch from at the Rendezvouz! It woudl explain a lot. When I wandered in today, there was a bloke with an oval plate (one of those glassy ones with the faded blue fringe), barely holding a vast heap of chips, a whole fish (had been skinned and evidently fried in butter), battered giant prawns on skewers, other assorted battered fishy things and lemon bits and sauce… he was steadily working through it.

It’s the only cafe “up the other end of the main street”. Other than Melita, but that’s a more restrained coffee and breaky and foccacia affair, and the people there are very young. The couple in the Rendezvouz are elderly (and very nice).

heir specials are things like Chicken Mornay, and it’s interesting to see how they’ll have the same stuff on there a few days running, but then someone will run out and rub out specific things!

Ahhh, the good old “specials” board. The “specials” board in almost any establishment is food that is:

1. Bought by the owners at a special price from the distributors, who without doubt are selling it cheaply because the food is close to passing it’s shelf life to distribute

2. Been hanging around the cafe/restaurant so long (often in the back of a minging fridge), they need to shift it out the door before they legally have to throw it in the bin

3. Or you know that roast chicken they served as the Sunday Roast 4 days ago…that becomes “chicken Mornay” until it’s all been bought or its so old it has to be turfed.

Of course it’s a specials board. The cafe/restaurant need to e”special”ly get it out the door to make money rather than throwing it in the bin.

I’ll generally never order anything off the specials board anywhere, unless I know a bit more about WHY it’s on the menu as a “special”.

These accounts and comments are not “just my opinion”. I’ve spent plenty of time in kitchens from pub/club level right up to fine dining. The special menu is always the same situation to one degree or another.

Are you dumb ?

No, I can talk quite loudly, when the mood takes me (and it does, often). What on earth made you ask this?

Sorry but the original owners of the Central are still in Queanbeyan running the cafe at the other end of the main street so if you want a real central experience give them a try as the others are just pale cpoies of the real thing

Is that the Rendezvous (place with the lightbulbs)? Best chicken Schnitzel roll EVER.

I had also heard that the Central Cafe in Queanbeyan had been sold and both the quality and quantity of the food had gone downhill since then. I do remember, however, that the service was always a bit ordinary.

My guess is that the Gungahlin cafe has been opened since the new owners took over in Queanbeyan, and since they don’t understand what the Central Cafe means to Queanbeyanites, they probably have no idea how to run another outlet either.

Well, sorry to be a nuisance about it!!

*arched eyebrow*

I’ll just go and wait in the morgue until it happens, shall I?

*other arched eyebrow*

I wouldn’t want to inconvenience anybody, what with dying and all ….

For all I know I may be dead, but does anybody care?!

For someone who’s dying, you’re making an awful lot of noise …

Well if your heart’s buggered, you shoudln’t be thinking about the likes of the Central! Not good heart food.

I wander past the Queanbo Central most days, and they have this GIANT blackboard propped out on the street. this thing is huuuuge. (possibly to foil the Theives of Queanbeyan). Their specials are things like Chicken Mornay, and it’s interesting to see how they’ll have the same stuff on there a few days running, but then someone will run out and rub out specific things!

As I lie here in my hospital bed, not overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, with the conveniently located emergency defibrilator at my side, I can only comment that, should I survive the nature of this medical emergency, I may find it in what is left of my heart after the triple bypass and pacemaker, to reconsider this venue in light of the terrible shock that I have recently suffered.

*cough cough*

Haven’t been there myself, but to be fair to all – Witch only commented on the service, not the food. Perhaps we could get a more rounded report from others who have been?

What!!!?

*splutter*

*ambulance sirens*

*etc*

Granny, my experience of this cafe is the opposite to witch’s. Don’t believe all you read. Even on the internets 🙂

It’s all in the blagging, Joe Canberran!

Granny it’s worth reading the other thread – totally different experience with 50+ odd comments.

Me? I’ve never been there.

Sometimes news is what you make of it, like bbq’d lawnmowers.

; )

slow news day

It does sound like a very unpleasant evening.

I am glad to know this sort of thing so as not to waste my money, but more importantly even one precious second of my life. Living in Gungahlin it is pretty inevitable that we would have gone there sooner or later, and I appreciate the warning.

I’m not really fussed which thread it’s on. In some ways it helps not to have to wade through all the previous stuff. In other ways it can be interesting to get some background perspective.

Gosh Joe, yes maybe I did think it was worthy of being a story seeing as I put it through.

CCG is run by the original owner of the CCQ.

Joe Canberran5:09 pm 16 Sep 08

Worthy of a story? i think not. Witch you should have posted this as a comment on the Gungahlin Central Cafe thread here (which you would have found if you had done a search) and if Riot’s esteemed editor thought it was worthy them he would have bumped the post.

Then again someone had to approve your post so maybe Mr Ed thought it was worthy of a story…?
