TAMS are giving notice that the very busy Challis Street in Dickson is getting a speed limit reduction.

From Monday 22 April 2013, the speed limit on Challis Street in Dickson will be 50 kilometres per hour (km/h).

Work has recently been completed as part of the Australian Government’s Nation Building Black Spot Program to implement painted turn bays and improve lane markings on Challis Street. In addition to this work the speed limit will now be reduced by 10 km/h, from the existing 60 km/h to the default urban speed limit of 50 km/h.

I’d rather TAMS focus on slowing down traffic around all the crossings – so many fools just scream though those crossings with nary a care in the world.

Popup traffic lights? or just detour signs.

Challis Street is a black spot? How so? The only death risk I would think would be that someone might kill a cyclist on the PEDESTRIAN crossing, and I don’t think that has happened.

Why would they bother? The average speed on Challis Street between 5pm and 6pm is about 2km/h thanks to all the rat-runners. The longest part of my trip home from Dickson to Tuggeranong is getting out of the carpark and onto Northbourne Avenue.

The rat-runners come up Wakefield -> Dooring Street -> Moncrieff St -> Morphett St -> Challis St -> Antill St -> Northbourne Ave. I guess they feel that all the extra driving is worth the illusion of avoiding the red light on Northbourne x Antill? Who knows. Then there are the ratrunners leaving Northbourne -> Morphett -> Challis -> Antill to skip the lights. Between the two sets, there is very little opportunity to exit Challis St onto Morphet Street turning either left or right.

If it was up to me, I’d put temporary signals on the Challis x Cape Street intersection. Screw the rat runners. I hate you all so much.
