Changes for Canberra media?

IBN News reports the Nationals have secured an historic agreement for a minimum level of live and local content on regional radio stations.

Speculation is rife as to what this may mean for media in the ACT and surrounding region.

Local operators told the recent senate media inquiry that extra regulation would do more harm than good, and would be costly to implement.

UPDATED: ED: Senator Kate Lundy’s horrible “Radio Kate” is claiming Canberra will “lose” two of the six media “voices” in Canberra. She doesn’t say which ones.

I wonder if adverts be counted as local content? 🙂

Prime and 10 already have those little ‘live’ 2 minute news breaks and weather spots where someone reads out potted news for the area. I’d say we’ll just see more of those.

Well that’s why they’re asking for “live and local” but I agree the devil will be in the detail and it’ll need motivated regulation to make a difference.

Don’t they just use the old “Sandra Sully presents” trick to get around local content laws anyway? Take US/UK show, stick gormless Aussie celebrity at the front and before the ad breaks to sy “cummin’ up next, cobbers”, maybe add an Aussie voice-over, et voila – ginuin’ shtrayin’ content, moiayt.

I think they give it an honest try, give me the budget and i’d do something more interesting but i can’t promise i’d get the advertisers.

Johnboy, I’m not sure you can even count WIN in that list. If by “having anything to say” you mean “whose content doesn’t just consist of press releases read out verbatim”, that is.

But who needs TV when you can now watch streaming legislative assembly?

“I’m all for local content, as long as it replaces American crap.”

Unfortunately Thumper, they tend to just make Aussie versions of American crap e.g. Idol, etc.

OK, let’s do another headcount… local media owners covered by these laws and actually having anything to say…

Capital Radio Network, Rural Press, WIN

Have I missed anyone?

Which reminds me, how’s Camelvision going?

Boosting ‘local content’ is lefty speak for drawing a bigger audience to the ABC – forcing the likes of nine and seven to pump more local crap in between re-runs of Big Brother, Frasier and MASH just means that your average joe-shitbag will gravitate towards the ABC (given that they’re not smart enough to read a book instead).

My office. We speculated for about 5 minutes, and then skipped down memory lane to the good old pre aggregation days.

“Speculation is rife?” Really? Among who?

I’d be happy to help them out for a reasonable fee.
