The ABC has the tragic news of a Canberra couple in hospital after a truck hit them while trying to change a tyre on the Hume:

Police say one of the truck’s trailers hit the car in the breakdown lane near Jugiong in southern New South Wales on Wednesday afternoon.

A 50-year-old man from Deakin in Canberra’s south has a broken leg and his 49-year-old wife suffered ankle and chest injuries.

Breakdown lanes should be avoided as a place to breakdown. Drive slowly, with flat tyre, to an off ramp and get as far as possible off the freeway before stopping.

“after a truck hit them while trying to change a tyre on the Hume:”

what was the truck doing trying to change a tyre?

frivolity aside, i hope they recover (getting a 404 on the link, though) and get a good lawyer.

Probably a sad reminder to park well clear if the road and if theres two lanes, move to the outer lane. I’m amazed at the amount of people that decide to pass within 1-2 meters of a stationary car that could potentially pull out, open the door, when there’s no one in the other lane.

Well I wonder how far off the road they parked. But with the other tradgedy near Mittagong when two were killed in the breakdown lane, it may pay to cary one of those big witch hat things you see at construction sites. In fact I will pick up one soon that has been in a ditch for months. But of course it ain’t going to stop a 20 ton semi. Give a bloke a false sense of security ?? then whack.
