Commuters on one of Canberra’s busiest roads into and out of the city might want to rethink their travel and work plans this week and beyond.
Parkes Way between the Glenloch Interchange and the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge is already a logjam in peak times but from tomorrow (Tuesday), daytime resealing work will likely mean this key artery becomes clogged.
Transport Canberra and City Services advises that a range of road resealing activities starting tomorrow, weather permitting, will take place between 9:30 am and 6 pm.
Tomorrow, the Glenloch Interchange northbound ramp from Forest Drive to William Hovell Drive will be closed from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
On Wednesday, the Glenloch Interchange eastbound off-ramp to Parkes Way will be closed from 9:30 am to 6 pm.
On Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Tuesday 29 November, resealing work will close some lanes on Parkes Way eastbound from the Glenloch Interchange for about one kilometre from 9:30 am to 6 pm.
On Wednesday 30 November and Thursday 1 December, resealing work will close some lanes on Parkes Way eastbound from the Acton Tunnel to the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge from 9:30 am to 6 pm.
On Friday 2 and Saturday 3 December, some lanes will be closed westbound from the Acton Tunnel to the bridge over Sullivans Creek from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
On Monday 5 December, the Glenloch Interchange westbound on-ramp from Parkes Way to the Tuggeranong Parkway will be closed from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
Some work will also occur at the weekend.
Parkes Way, like every other road in Canberra, has taken a battering from the weather, with the relentless rain leaving a pock-marked surface and motorists having to dodge potholes to avoid damage to their vehicles.
City office workers might want to use their work from home arrangements if they have them to avoid travel into the city and take some of the pressure off Parkes Way and other roads such as Cotter Road and Adelaide Avenue that will inevitably be used more as motorists seek alternative routes.
