Charcoal Chicken Manuka - restaurant review

When returning to work after the Christmas/New Year break, I noticed that a new Charcoal Chicken takeaway had opened in place of where there was a Chinese restaurant (Tim’s?) on the corner of Canberra Ave and Captain Cook Cres in Manuka.

I was very excited to say the least as the Inner South has been screaming out for a decent takeaway for awhile, something along the lines of Chicken Gourmet in Garema Square or even just your suburban fish and chip joint.

That excitement was extinguished today when my work mate and I grabbed some takeaway for lunch.

Upon entering, the place is clean and simple nothing fancy just the usual of what you would expect of a takeaway. It advertises itself as serving gourmet Portuguese chicken with the menu ranging from Chicken, Seafood and BBQ items through to Burgers and Salads.

I ordered the plain Portuguese Chicken Burger with both the Piri-Piri and Garlic sauce options while my mate ordered a Quarter Chicken pack that consisted of chips and salad or vegies and potatoes (he took the chips and salad option).

The chicken and chips were quickly packaged up ready to go while my chicken hadn’t even hit the hot plate yet. I was happy to see that the chicken breast fillet was cooked to order as opposed to being selected out of a bain-marie and admittedly was done in not too long.

We jumped in the car and were back at our desks within 2 minutes but already it was too late.

My burger was wet, not just damp around the edge from the fresh tomato, I mean it was wet, like holding a sponge that you had just lifted from a sink full of washing up water, and it didn’t taste much better.

The burger contained the normal elements of a plain chicken burger – lettuce, tomato and the chicken breast but for some reason there was also grilled onion. As I said earlier I requested both the garlic and piri-piri sauces and that was about all you could taste, the piri-piri was quiet mild which was disappointing as my taste buds were in the mood for a kick.

My mate comment on his meal as being “ok”, again there really wasn’t much flavour, not even salt on the chips and of course they had gone soggy by this stage, the salad was however fresh and not pre packaged.

The meals are not expensive but not super cheap, I paid $8 for my burger alone where as my dining partner paid $7 for his lunch pack.

I don’t think we will be rushing back here in a hurray and perhaps these are just some teething problems. I really do hope is the case as like I said the Manuka/Kingston area really has been waiting for a takeaway, the kind of place where you can get a chicken and chips or a fishermans catch.

Eaten here a couple of times. Haven’t had the burger, but ordered a sit-down meal of chicken and salad. They offer their chicken with either a piri-piri sauce or a lemon dressing. I had the piri-piri the first time and have to say it was pretty good. Got to talking with the lady that owns the joint and discovered she used to cook at Vasco’s in Kingston. The second time I went for the lemon and it seemed a little dry with no dressing as advertised. When I enquired about it, I was told that the lemon dressing is on the chicken prior to cooking, but couldn’t really make out any lemon flavour. It’s fair to say that they are experiencing a few teething problems, but all in all their product is fairly well priced and pretty good.
