I may be missing something, but what if she was donating boxes full of Blu ray players, blu rays, armani suits and gold jewellery? haha Obviously an exaggeration, but how do we know that she isn’t leaving useful things there for the charity instead of just dumping rubbish? I have put bags full of clothes in the bins before and if it is in a bag it’d look like garbage I guess. Or is the issue just that the bin is full and she is dumping it next to the bin? Or did you witness it close enough to tell what was in the boxes?

No matter what it is she’s getting rid of here, it’s going to the tip at the charity’s expense.

Wouldn’t the charity collector’s sift through the stuff somewhat and at least have a glance in the boxes and determine if something is valuable they will put it in with the stuff to keep? It wouldn’t make sense for them to blindly keep all of the stuff in the bin which may include garbage and dispose of the stuff next to the bin which may include valuables. Also, to be fair, some items may not fit in the bin and the shops aren’t known for their extensive opening hours. Is there another way to donate?

As far as I know, anything left outside of a charity *clothing* bin is deemed tainted and unacceptable. They don’t collect from these bins every single day, so the chances of anything left outside the bin being soiled (whether that be by the weather, a local dog or some miscreants) is too great to risk.

If you’ve got something that you want to donate and you believe to be valuable to someone in need, make the time to get it to the shopfront. If you seriously can’t spare 10 minutes during your lunch break or on a Saturday morning, then consider listing your valuable donation on freecycle. If it’s truly valuable to a charity, they’ll often come and pick things up from your house too (usually furniture and large items only though).

Good tip with the freecycle thing. Although do you have any tips on how best to use freecycling? I saw there was a yahoo group, but I joined up and they just spammed me with 100 emails a day with every communication from anyone on the site and it seemed impractical to actually search through and find what u want or to advertise urself without going through all that spam either in emails or on the site which is laid out the same way.

It is difficult because I know I personally get a 30 minute lunch break only and by the time I walk to my car, drive somewhere and back and walk back, I’d be late for sure and without even eating lunch. But i guess that depends on your job and the location where you work etc. I also work some saturdays. So it’s pretty difficult for some. Though I’d imagine the majority of canberra in the APS with fairly flexible hours and long lunches could manage.

Yeah I’d agree that if you wished to donate you should put it in the bin or take it to the shop, but given that they are there, if you were collecting them for the charity, why wouldn’t you collect the most useful stuff regardless of its location and then dispose of the rest? Obviously not if it has gone mouldy in the rain, but if it is all fine and you see some fine china in a box compared to some muddy boots in the bin, I’d chuck out the boots and keep the fine china if I were them.

Sweet, so a few minutes with Photoshop and a quick email and I can get anyone fined $200. Watch out the next non-parent parking in a PWP spot.

Ah..but thats not illegal. PWP spots are just a suggestion. A suggestion I note, find incredibly stupid, and then chose to ignore.

I’m sure I can knock up a pretty convincing photo of your car doing something illegal. Now the court of public oppinion can be backed up with real fines.

Dumping crap on the side of the road is wrong no matter if you think other people would treasure your junk or not

I guess it comes down to how badly you want to see this woman get a $200 fine for being lazy.

How badly do I want people who dump rubbish on my street to get caught and fined so perhaps they’ll stop doing it? Pretty badly

This carpark has recently been fenced off. Does anyone know what they are going to build there?

they are “clothing bins” for charity and not a Tardis to jam in boxes of crap you couldn’t sell at Trash and Treasure. I’m pretty sure stores are open Saturday mornings to drop off larger items if they can be of use.

Dude – it’s already been said. Dumping things next to the charity bins is just as illegal as dumping them in the park or on the road. Also said, just above, is that if she’s dumping useful items, she should take them to the shop. No matter what it is she’s getting rid of here, it’s going to the tip at the charity’s expense.

Then perhaps she should drop it off direct at the charity store (if it really is useful).

Too right. I’ve taken things to the Salvos at fyshwick and we’ve often dropped things off at Vinnies in Tuggers.

Just take it to the bloody shop for god’s (Beryl’s) sake.

Hopefully the ranger you called was Walker. A Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the face is undoubtedly the best solution to this problem (and most others too).

If the boxes were going from the kerbside into the back of the ute, it would be treated as theft. Why do the police not take any interest in it the other way around? Are the goods the property of the charity once they sit next to a bin? If so, nothing wrong with this picture except for what is in the boxes is not clothing, nor is it inside the bin, nor is the person doing it out of the goodness of their heart.

I once reported someone to the cops for pinching stuff from next to a charity bin and the cops weren’t very interested. They thought I was reporting dumping at first.

The charities send out a mixed meesage about this. On one hand they say if it’s not placed in the bin then it’s dumping and penalties apply and then they also say stuff outside the bins is property of the charity and penalties apply for stealing.

It would be nice if rather than getting a $200 fine people caught dumping have to do community service helping charity groups collect items from their charity bins. Or at the very least the $200 goes to one of the charities.

Good thinking. After all, she does have a ute and a good strong back. 20 hours of community service doing clothing collections would probably make her think more than a measly $200.

It’s also foolhardy for the vulnerable to trust non-prescription medicine

Some folk retain a healthy distrust of authoritarian force wielders, especially since our constabulary ultimately serve the same bankers the Gestapo did.

Power corrupts, and we have granted our herders more power than any of their forebears even dreamed of. Omnipresent eyes in the sky and our homes. These guardians of ours now enforce laws of terror, which allow them to kidnap, extradite and torture anyone at anytime.

It would be foolhardy for the prisoners to entirely trust the gaolers.

Truthiness said :

You could always call the local Gestapo, I’m sure they’d love a chance to get another arrest, quotas to fill and all that. I have no idea if she broke a law, but practically everything is illegal anyway if you look hard enough, and anyway, you could just call her a suspected terrorist and there won’t even need to be a charge, or a court, or a lawyer!

Otherwise you could pass the info on to the charity, they probably have some process in place.

I guess it comes down to how badly you want to see this woman get a $200 fine for being lazy.

The Gestapo dragged Jews and political activists and a few inconveniently noisy Christians away in the night and tortured and/or murdered them. It’s a bit lazy to draw the comparison with a woman who may or may not face a small fine, isn’t it?

Also, does that comment qualify as Godwinesque? As opposed to merely grotesque?

Well I tried to do the right thing and report what I had observed and provide the photographic evidence. I was on hold for 20 minutes with Canberra Connect. The lady who eventually answered didn’t know how to handle the call. She then said I would need to be transferred to another area that closes at 5pm. As it was after 5pm she wanted to give me their direct number to ring back during business hours.

Seriously I went out of my way to get the photo, ring Canberra Connect, wait on hold and now they want me to ring back again!

Just how serious is the ACT Government about this?

Use the online form. https://www.contact.act.gov.au/app/ask You can also attach the photo. This will then give you a reference number you can follow up with.

If you haven’t heard back in two weeks write to your local member and quote the reference number.

Thank you bigfeet, that was very useful, if only the Canberra Connect staffer told me about that! Will see what happens with that now.

Looks like a ranga dumping a boatload of policies.

Perhaps actgovco should put up a speed camera, they fix everything.

Charities should set up a dob in a dumper website (or some enterprising website developer company could do this for them) and put on display these ignorant twits who dump their rubbish, then plod can then access this 24/7 and do what they do.

Ah, she is littering, dumping her rubbish in the public domain. It is there now, the box she has in her hands and the rest of the crap in the back of her ute. It’s not clothes or blankets it’s rubbish.

She should be vilified.

It doesn’t matter what’s in the boxes – The charity will have to pay to dispose of it properly (along with the rest of the crap dumped there illegally).

One day as we approached the dead-end, we saw this clown there cheerfully unloading an entire ute load of bulging garbage bags onto the side of the road next to a gate. His unselfconscious manner seemed to indicate that this was simply the sort of thing that one did with ones garbage these days.

I called the Belco police and gave them his vehicle and rego details, but nothing ever appeared to come of it.

Maybe because that’s in NSW, not ACT.

You learn something new every day.

There’s a recycling centre at Mitchell, just down the road, where you can dump broken electronics and the like for free. Pass it on.

Maybe the boxes are full of very useful things just to big to get in the bins? 🙂

I love the train of thought here.

“You know what a charity really needs? A dead car battery, a half inflated pool and some cardboard boxes. Homeless people love cardboard boxes, right? Those poor smacky bums will have a field day with this lot, like happy little mice in a dumpster.”

I can see their faces at the sorting center when they see how many cardboard investment properties they’ve just inherited. A proper Samaritan.

Overweight, 3 qtr tights as pants, unnecessary falcon ute courtesy of a bank loan, Gungahlin, dumping unwanted goods at a charity bin… Yep, all looks in order here. Standard practice. Nothing to see here people.

A festively plump bogan in bum pants dumping a good load worth of junk on a charity .. lazy, cheap and inexcusable, they should be reported.

The dead-end of Parkwood is in NSW, so that would be why nothing came of reporting it to ACT Policing.

She was saving the $10 that it would cost to take it to the tip or the petrol the ute would use going up to the Brindies to dump it by the side of the road. What a turd.
