ACT Policing has seized a vehicle for the second time in four months after it was seen doing a burnout in a carpark off Florey Drive yesterday (Sunday, January 29).

Police were conducting a mobile patrol in Latham around 4.40pm when they saw the black V8 Holden Calais doing the burnout.

When police arrived, the driver of the vehicle jumped out of the vehicle and ran off. A 19-year-old man, who was the owner of the vehicle, remained in the front passenger’s seat.

The driver, a 21-year-old Charnwood man, later returned to the vehicle and admitted to having driven the car during the burnout.

The vehicle, which had been seized by police for a similar offence in October last year, was seized again and transported to the Exhibit Management Centre where it will be held until the case in heard in court.

The driver will be summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

Wow, that really is crap! My old communist 250 makes about 5HP, which is about 20HP per litre.

These kids should not have been doing what they were doing, in the place they were doing it, but I feel for them as I too was young once. There is a time and place for everything. In this case the time is after 10pm and the place is Stockdill drive.

The police putting out a media release seems a bit over the top for this kind of shenanigans. I wonder how many people have been hurt by someone doing a burn-out in Canberra? How does it compare to the number of people who have been killed during police pursuits?

Recycle the car into alcohol and sugar water cans.

What, like six packs of “Weeping Donkey” brand of bourbon and cola?

My old 500hp 2door STI used to do good 4wd burnouts and doughnuts. The ATS carbon clutch took the abuse nicely.

My old “L series” Subaru wagon does 4wd donuts too, if it is on a nearly frictionless surface.

I’ve seen some very tallented people do impressive burnouts in cars which make almost zero power. I’ve never understood the challenge in a V8 commodore Calais.

Because a GM V8 fits into the category of almost no power. They are very good at turning a large amount of fuel into a lot of noise and very little power compared to their size.

Yeah, who has ever made good power out of a small block Chev.

The big GM mountain motors make over 2HP per litre the biggest at the moment is 1005 cubs and makes 2150hp normally aspirated and over 3000HP on Nitrous. Sonny Leonard can make them streetable on low octane unleaded over 1700hp. Thats about the HP all people should have for a daily driver lol.

Unlike most of the above comments, I have no problem with the Cops taking this hoons car. Can’t be bothered looking it up in the criminal code, but I’m sure deliberate sustained loss of traction or control of a vehicle is against the law. Not to mention a burnout is 1 step away from losing control of a 1.5 ton weapon. Maybe we should ship all the in-experienced drivers doing burnouts off to the suburbs of those who don’t have a problem with this sort of behaviour and wait for it to all end in tears, damaged property and injured friends and relatives?

What he said.

Burnouts are for losers. Driving in circles and going nowhere while making a lot of smoke and noise is pointless, expensive and potentially dangerous when conducted on public roads. The people who do this sort of crap are the same tossers who like to get sideways through roundabouts in their V8 utes when I’m on the same roundabout with my wife and kids in the car.

And two in a row shows a definite lack of awareness of consequences.

agreed.

What an evil, vile man. We need to get this scum off the streets so all the drink drivers can safely get home at night after a night out partying and punching on in the city.

Burnouts are for retards. I’m happy for one less retard (or his car at least) to be taken off the road for a while.

Burnouts are a legitimate sport apparently. Gotta train somewhere.

Well, you’ve got to lose control a few times before you learn to do one right.

The image of the owner just sitting in the passenger seat while the driver runs off makes me think of The Simpsons…

Streuth, a couple of kids doing a burnout? I’ll bet no one round here ever did a burnout in their youth.
Better lock them up and throw away the key!

because we should always wait for the children and puppies to be killed before any action is taken
