That makes no sense. Because I make a comment stating we shouldn’t stereotype a whole suburb and its people I might get stabby?

FWIW I’m not even from Charnwood. Just get a little sick of the high and mighty amongst us who like to put down the poorer suburbs and the people who live in them.

Stereotypes exist for a reason (usually) and in this case it’s based in reality. Charnie is wall to wall scumbags, a Mecca for ACT bogans and trogs (on the northside anyway) and a sinkhole for welfare dollars. It’s not just about being poor, but being poor AND a loser.

You are so wrong that it’s actually quite funny.

Yes, so ignorant clowns like yourself can express their ‘opinion’ without actually knowing anything about the subject.

He had a point until he explained himself.

This is now the Charnwood anthem…….

No – it isn’t by Eminem…

Now; if he were to record a version… 😛

I’ve been from one end of Charnwood “to the other, and I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff”; I especially enjoy the groups of under 10YOs hanging around the shops after 10pm, and really enjoyed the parent yelling at their (at most) four year old “don’t you [f-ing] swear at me!”. I don’t feel unsafe, but I definitely see the low socio-economic element… not that there’s anything wrong with that… but I think they do attract stabby-type behaviours, because they aren’t as bound to socially acceptable behaviour as anyone else…

Mind you, the upper class (rarely found in Charnwood, of course) keep their crime socially acceptable and off-the-radar…

Hahahahahahahahahaha

I spent some time in Charnwood as a kid in the 70’s and early 80s, went to the primary school there along with all the kids of the first families to move into the suburb. My old man formed a comunity action group that got the bridge built over Covington Crescent so the kids could get to school without having to cross the road. Very happy childhood memories of the place, you could get a huge box of chips at the takeaway opposite the chicken shop for 40 cents – more than 3 kids could eat in a sitting! Still in touch with some of my schoomates from year 6 class, class of 1980. Our teacher was none other than Dave Kilby who did some radio years later and was a wonderful teacher. What happened to Charnwood?

This really is a problem area isn’t it? Obviously it needs a concerted effort on crime reduction – though I also gather than they live in the area but do the crimes on other parts of town.

I’m not sure if we have a 24/7 police station down there but if we don’t, that may be a start.

If 2 stabbings in 3 and a bit years you would classify it as a problem area, then yes. Of course well-to-do areas have also had their share of stabbings in the past few years (Kingston and Lyneham come to mind) Otherwise, no. It is a suburb that sits at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum in a wealthy city. Therefore people find it easier to pass judgement on the suburb and its residents (despite the fact that few people have probably ever been there).

Most people in Charnwood are decent people. I’ve never had any problems at the Charnie shops and never felt unsafe in the suburb.

Not just stabbings my friend – you need to include other crimes, threats of assault and the other little ‘bits’ that go together but may not make the crime stats. But don’t get me wrong – I wasn’t singling out Charnwood (or at least I didn’t mean to). It’s a problem all over the city.

Self defence should do the trick 😉
