ACT Policing arrested and charged an 18-year-old Charnwood man following an act of animal cruelty in Gungahlin yesterday (Friday, September 30).

Around 3.40pm, police attended a recreation park at Yerrabi Pond after receiving a report of a deceased black swan at the location.

Police located the alleged offender a short time later in a vehicle parked on Wunderlich Street in Gungahlin.

The man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal Causing Death. He was released on Watch House bail with strict conditions, and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on October 14.

North District Superintendent Mick Calatzis said police are working with other ACT Government agencies, and are concerned about the seriousness of this incident.

“Animal cruelty matters are a criminal offence and are treated as such by police,” Superintendent Calatzis said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident at Yerrabi Pond yesterday, and is yet to speak to police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

I would actually support the ACT government making it mandatory for all persons suspected of a crime or misdemeanour to have to log on to here to try to justify their stupidity. It would kill pay TV in the ACT in an instant. Perhaps we could invite white trash scumbags from interstate and abroad to come to Canberra for the purposes of doing something appalling and stupid just for the sheer entertainment value. Rather than being advised that they have the right to remain silent, they should be advised that they have the right to justify their stupidity on-line and the holding cells should be kitted out with internet access.

Oh, yes. Ooooh Yeees.

Forget the Hume Hilton, we have a 21st Century replacement for the Stocks: the Internet.

My god, what are you on woman?

Wildturkeycanoe – +1000.

While I certainly don’t condone animal cruelty, this has yet to go to court. Were any of us, apart from asdf123 and seesee2, actually present? No?

Right, I thought not. So it could in fact have been two boys poking a dead swan with a stick?

But the fact that these 2 people don’t express themselves in perfect Canberra public service language immediately gives the rest of us the right to pour scorn on them, does it? How many of us did dumb stuff one way or another growing up? Oh, so that’s most of us then. Have we any idea how old either of our contributors are? No?

Oh, but they come from Charnwood. Gee, that’s good enough to throw the book at them – case closed. Yes, maybe the statistics point that way, and there may or may not be (I don’t have a clue) a lot of crime either in or from that suburb.

Sometimes I wonder about this city, and the country as a whole. Oh, the media told me, so it must be true. Or, “everyone says” that such and such a place is bad, that crime is going up.

How, pray tell, are we any better than any episode of the Simpsons where the populace suddenly find pitchforks and torches to demonise someone? So much for progress….

If these people are in fact guilty, then the appropriate penalties should apply. Otherwise, the presumption of being innocent until proven guilty is the basic philosophy of our legal system.

Remember that when you are next accused of something you didn’t do.

I have enjoyed this thread immensely. It carries on the fine tradition maintained admirably by RiotACT of white trash baiting. This is a tremendous pastime and terribly funny. It starts with some white trash scumbag doing something appalling, people on here commenting on the stupid act in a condescending manner, only to have white trash scumbag try to defend him/herself with grammar, spelling and punctuation which leaves the condescending classes howling with laughter and derision and in absolutely no doubt that white trash scumbag was actually guilty of the heinous action complained about.

This would be tremendous sport amd an apt replacement for the ancient and venerable tradition of bear baiting – hell – did a bear ever poke a swan – what did bears do to deserve that?

In this case I can see that our swan poker (now was that with a stick?) is not as stupid as he seems. As he has identified himself also as a woman bashing swan poker, he has virtually ensured that he is not going to be able to get an impartial trial here in the ACT, thereby affording himself a legal avenue of escape. Methinks that SP is really a law PhD from the ANU and he should confess right now (on-line of course).

Good Gawd people, I’d hate to have you as my jury. From the headline’s “act of animal cruelty”, “deceased black swan”,”Charnwood” and “alleged offender” there seems to be a perception that a certain suburb in Canberra is at a state where depravity is infinitely inverse to the intellectual capacity of it’s constituents. Couldn’t it be simply a mistake that an overzealous member of the “upper class” north has seen possibly a humane act by a person, who did the right thing and put an injured animal out of it’s agony with the only means at hand? Based on evidence so far, this could be a possible scenario. Then again, so could the fact the animal may have been an alien spy, who for inter-stellar relations had to be disguised as a swan so as not to bring attention to the breakdown in negotiations between the Gankran Sovereignty and the Milky Way Alliance.

Seeing that everyone here already knows the background of not only this still innocent and untried person, but also their entire neighborhood, I’d like to suggest a few home truths of my own based on previous “imaginations of the evidence presented”.
Gungahlin residents – Slow internet, slow roads, slow evacuation warning systems, slow to sell anything in Crace and slowing down the rest of Canberran’s trying to get out on Barton Highway – yet quick to dob in anything untoward like being a resident of Charnwood.
Inner North Canberra – Living the elite life, paying top dollar for property, cycling to work everyday, arts and farts but too scared to walk at night for fear of the hard drug users knocking you off.
Southside – Everyone complaining about the junked cars in front yards, Commodores getting done for crimes everywhere, burning bushes [Bit Old Testament there, a bit of respectability at last]
Woden – No parking anywhere but little else happening at all!
Belconnen – Big phallic owl but the sun hits us first in the morning.
I won’t bag out the people across the borders because they are paying double for their power.
Anyone want to play ball? It’s my bat and I’ll swing at anything! Don’t make accusations, comments or otherwise unless you have something to add that is factual, non-discriminatory or includes an escape clause in case you’re proven wrong.

*that’s GOLD!!!*

it never ceases to amaze me how EVERY response ends up being a personal attack on someone…and usually for something as lame as their spelling! Grow up!

I bet your great fun at parties.

There are plenty of facts out there to show Charnwood as the most disadvantaged suburb in the ACT (apart from Symonston and Oaks Estate which dont really count).

As far as I am aware it is the only Woolworths in the ACT that sees the requirement to employ armed guards on Saturday night.

To see if it was dead. You could try and pick it up but the swan is a big bird and bites.

It just sounds odd. i hope that the police took the dead swan away for forensic tests.

Ladies and gentlemen, I must say that I am a little unsettled by this harsh analysis of Charnwood. My better half and I happily reside there and we are both in reputable upper rank employment (as is our neighbour who is an EL2). We also have 2 PhDs, one masters degree and several honours degrees between the two of us. We absolutely celebrate that there is not a pretentious, ultra clean, luxury 4 wheel drive in sight in our much loved suburb, though I must admit to noticing a distinct shortage of swans…

You know the original story is a direct quote of an ACT Policing media release, right?

A good defence to a defamation accusation is the defence of truth, and since your friend has indeed been arrested and charged with the named offence, while their innocence may be yet to be tested in court, it is true to state that they have been so charged.

Why was your friend poking a dead/dying swan with a stick? Alternatively – where’d they source the stick?

Thanks for the links, Skid. I’m not knowledgeable enough to assess the evidence one way or the other and have to rely on the experts for that. From the POV of my position of admitted ignorance, a single paper is probably insufficient to debunk (what I assume to be) the prior body of work, regardless of how convincing. Certainly, though, it raises significant serious doubts – enough to, as you say, quit perpetuating what may well prove to be a myth.

If you like, bear in mind that most of the trend towards “Animal cruelty is a strong indicator of human cruelty” is sourced via three works:

(Yes, there may be a possible link, but it is weak at best, and largely a question of sampling methods and researchers begging the question. IE: Seek and you will find.)

😀 Thank you! Sometimes RA is full of win.

… Haven’t there been studies that show that people who abuse animals run a significant risk of becoming people-abusers?

Many, but almost all of them methodologically flawed, according to Forging the links: (de)constructing chains of behaviours, Heather Piper and Steve Myers, Child Abuse Review Volume 15, Issue 3, pages 178-187, May/June 2006 .

(Entire article available for rent here)
Plain English summary of their earlier work here.

Quit perpetuating the myth.

For every study there is one side an another each saying the oposite.

Quite a number of studies show that people who come from single parent upbringing end up in court and jail, making up as much as 70-75%.

My other guess would be that charnwood would also be a very single parent demographic? (I’ve never risked my life to go there)

My guess would be this chap was raised by mum, and as good as she might have been, being a single parent gives kids control issues, no one is able to keep the single parent in check, so they are always right. So now the kid has control issues, has to murder a swan because he needs to be in control.

My research has shown that kids raised by parents who are into baseless generalisations and quoting half-arsed studies grow up to be arrogant, judgemental serial killers.

If you bother to check the evidence, you will find that economic background is the most important indicator that causes kids to resort to crime. It makes sense that quite a few of single parent families have a lower income than two income families, but not necessarily and with high incomes in the ACT, they are rarely living below the poverty line. Kids from poor 2-parent families are also over-represented in those stats.

If you like, bear in mind that most of the trend towards “Animal cruelty is a strong indicator of human cruelty” is sourced via three works:
1) “The threat to kill”, JM Macdonald , American Journal of Psychiatry, 120:125-130, August 1963;
2) “Enuresis, firesetting and cruelty to animals: A triad predictive of adult crime”, Daniel S Hellman and Nathan Blackman, American Journal of Psychiatry, 122:1431-1435, June 1966; and
3) “Childhood cruelty to animals and later aggression against people: A review”, A. R. Felthous and S. R. Kellert, American Journal of Psychiatry, 144:710-717, 1987 .
Together these are where the much-loved Macdonald Triad (firestarting, cruelty to animals, and bedwetting after the age of five) term comes from.

Wikipedia enjoys sourcing from Hensley and anecdotal FBI Agent’s experiences, but glosses over the fact that in Hensley’s 2003 article “From Animal Cruelty to Serial Murder: Applying the Graduation Hypothesis” Jeremy Wright and Christopher Hensley, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, February 2003 vol. 47 no. 1 71-88 (abstract\rental) he cited the trend as “a possible link between childhood cruelty toward animals and serial murder with the application of the graduation hypothesis”, but by the time he was published again in “Exploring the Link between Recurrent Acts of Childhood and Adolescent Animal Cruelty and Subsequent Violent Crime”, Suzanne E. Tallichet and Christopher Hensley, Criminal Justice Review Autumn 2004 vol. 29 no. 2 304-316(abstract\rental) he had toned it down to “respondents who had more siblings and who had committed repeated acts of animal cruelty were more likely to have engaged in recurrent acts of interpersonal violence”, and finally when he published “Recurrent Childhood Animal Cruelty: Is There a Relationship to Adult Recurrent Interpersonal Violence?”, Christopher Hensley and Suzanne E. Tallichet and Erik L. Dutkiewicz, Criminal Justice Review June 2009 vol. 34 no. 2 248-257 (abstract\rental) his argument was reduced to “…based on survey data from 180 inmates at a medium- and maximum-security prison… repeated acts of animal cruelty during childhood and pre-adolescence was predictive of later recurrent acts of violence toward humans, showing a possible relationship between the two.”

If you have the time, read the entirety of Cruelty Indivisible by Bernard Unti, or just skip to Pg24 for the Conclusion.

I think you might need to investigate this ‘theory’ a little deeper…

As much as we here joke (though with a somewhat factual basis) about Charnwood, it has become better there in the last decade. It still has pockets of Government housing, but there are regular, “normal” humans amongst those, and more generally amongst the suburb. No reason to be afraid to step into the suburb… unless you’ve made the problem, I guess… Many of the problem people seem to be being moved to grander Govt. accom. in Symonston…

I’m certain there would be a number of factors needed to create a human that will “do things” to animals, and that statistically, at least a couple of these might be shared in common. Though a failure to have control of their own lives, for whatever reason, makes sense to me…

Having seen the end of a few episodes of COPS on OneHD (right before the F1 coverage – I didn’t tune in for it), it seems (to me) the lack of suitable environment and parenting is behind most social ills… I remember a conversation with some students about their first memory being helping mum and dad separate the bud from the leaf on the kitchen table; and they were relatively normal children; imagine what the background is like for the for the child molesters, peadophiles, animal killers etc…

subjecting the offender to the same injuries inflicted upon the innocent swan would provide a satisfying outcome to this incident.

So, so many, and out of pure laziness I can’t link to any particular study. Suffice to say that the general public should be very scared of people who harm animals, because it is just the first step before these charming people move on to violent crimes against humans.

From memory, there is a horrifying statistic regarding violent prisoners incarcerated in the US – some 85% have a history of cruelty against animals.

If you know someone who has no qualms torturing an animal, be afraid – be very afraid.
