Criminal Investigation detectives have arrested three men in relation to the cannabis ‘grow house’ uncovered by police in Macgregor last year.

On 9 November 2012, police attended the house in Dagmar Berne Street in response to reports of water flowing freely from the house into the street. After gaining entry to the house, police located and seized a sophisticated hydroponics set up which was located on the upper level of the two-storey home.

Police seized 94 cannabis plants, with a potential street value, when mature, of $300 000.

As a result of an ongoing investigation into the grow house, Criminal Investigation detectives executed a search warrant at a house in Charnwood this morning (Wednesday, January 9). Three men aged 21, 22 and 24 were arrested by police, and taken to the ACT Watch House.

They are all expected to be charged with cultivating a traffickable quantity of cannabis for sale. Police will be opposing bail in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (Thursday, January 10).

Forgive my ( pardon the pun) dopiness, but what did the helicopter do? Look for heat sources or something else?

The helicopter flew in the sky

The government’s half way to banning cigarettes, they’re not going to legalise another cancer causing drug anytime soon.

Good luck to them. Forcing people to be healthy seems like a load of shite to me. To what end? So that we can sit around for a good 2 or 3 decades than we were ever meant to while our bodies and minds grow ever more decrepit. Shit, we keep hearing about the looming crisis of our ageing population, maybe we should stop trying to railroad people into growing old.

Oh really? Prove it. And when I say prove it, I mean you’re going to have to do better than anecdotes like “my friend blah blah blah” or the standard “just walk into any mental health lock-up and they’ll tell you blah blah blah” that seems to be the best anyone on here can come up with.

The closest to that I’ve heard is that while it does not cause schizophrenia, it may be a catalyst that brings on latent schizophrenia in people, but that is not the same thing at all.

The cost of getting a grow house Up and running and capable of a 300k crop would not be more than 30k. Lights and buckets full of grow wool are not expensive, fertilizer is the most expensive. And still not prohibitive.

And yes the helicopter run has caused many a bust.

We will be hearing about more drug busts this year, The cops know where all the druggies are located in Canberra from the helicopter we had flying over us a few months ago.

All the druggies or just the paranoid ones?

Definately the bottom rungs of a very long ladder- hopefully AFP can squeeze the names of the bigger fish out of the lads.

Very little chance of that. The ACT justice system slaps wrists. The “bigger fish”, if any are involved, are more likely to slap faces – with a baseball bat.

Such a waste of taxpayers money.

At a macro level, I agree with you. Marijuana and most other drugs should be legalised, regulated, quality controlled and taxed. This would make them a lot safer. I also suspect that taking away the illegal/rebellious aspect of their use would make them a lot less attractive to young people. The crims would lose most of their funding. Property crime would decrease as users would no longer need to break into houses like mine to support their habits. All sorts of good things would happen and almost everybody would win.

In the meantime though, the law is what it is, which means that the sort of people running gigs like this are likely to be Very Unattractive neighbours. Potential OMCG members as PH suggests, or people of that ilk. I have young children, and I wouldn’t want this happening in the house next to me, so (with mixed feelings) I’m prepared to applaud the cops in this case.

And if they OD and die, good riddance. As long as they take out any innocents driving thru a red light ala Mulley.

21, 22 and 24? They seem awfully young to be running a show like this, even if they did stuff it up. Makes wonder if they really were the brains behind the operation, or just the labourers and eventual fall-guys.

For instance, how do three young hoods get the resources together to buy or rent a two storey house and then fill it with hydroponic gear?

They were growing it from scratch. Hence “grow house”. Struggling to see how bigger fish were needed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the house is owned by the ACT Government.

Probably nom’s for an OMCG.
