Not too sure how widely the advertising has gone for this, but recently in the Holt area I had an advertisment dropped into my letterbox saying that a new chinese restraunt has opened up at my local, Magpies Golf Club – Holt.

The wife and I went up last night, and the first thing I was astounded by was the genuine 90’s prices, most dishes on the menu were only $9.00 ($12.50 if you want seafood).

The food was extremely palatable, and they should be charging a lot more for their food than they are (they are possibly being a bit cheaper because it’s so remote).

If you’re in the Belconnen area in the next few weeks and are hungry, I’d recommend you give it a shot, They’ve also got beer at genuine 80’s prices (indeed a lot of the Magpies Kippax staff drink at the Holt complex when they’ve got time off, a pretty good indicator that they know where the good prices are) and a great sunset view over the farmland and mountain ranges northwards of the ACT.

Thumper – they’ve got chicken schnitzel for $9.00 too 🙂

Everybody else, if you’ve never had a magpies chicken schnitzel, try to imagine 2 flattened chicken’s sewn together, it’s slightly bigger than that.

Yeah, I like the Phnom Penh. I also really like Kinh Do (sp?) at Macquarie Shops, if you don’t mind the decor… They have some connection with the Griffith Vietnamese as well, I always see the same guy whenever I am in any of them… (he reckons he can split himself in two).

I went with the wife to Phnom Penh in Belconnen last night. Standard Vietnamese/Cambodian fare. Tasty, lots of it. The house special did not inspire me on the menu.

We had four small spring rolls, Chicken and veg main, caramelised pork main and jasmine rice for two plus two soft drinks. 33 bucks, noice. Cheap decor but squeaky clean.

Off to Magpies next time then. Choice!

That’s my brothers local as well (one of them) and I have been there with him on a few occasions. I always thought that NOT using the restaurant there was one of the biggest wastes of space in Canberra. Im glad to see it’s open and even better that the food is ok as well.

I will definately give it a try
