Going with an oldie but a goodie for this week’s Cheap Eats. Gus’ in Civic was opened in the late 1960s and is one of the oldest cafes in Canberra. Looking at the menu I’m also reminded that Gus’ was also Canberra’s first outdoor cafe.

I really like Gus’. It’s extremely unpretentious, the food is simple but delicious and really reasonably priced. I went along on a Sunday afternoon for lunch that was technically breakfast, so I was starving.

It took a little longer than usual for a waiter to get to us but they were friendly enough and apologised for the wait. I ordered a vegie focaccia and my partner ordered a grilled chicken breast toasted sandwich. Both came with fries.

My focaccia was huge; stuffed with grilled capsicum, eggplant, sweet potato, with rocket, pesto and feta. I wolfed half of it down in approximately 4 seconds and was then too full to finish the other half. The chicken toasted sandwich was also huge with thick slices of bread that were the size of about 3 regular slices each.

The food isn’t fancy but it’s delicious and cheap. Both our sandwiches were around $11 each, including fries. The only thing I would ‘complain’ about is that the cost of a soft drink is $5, which is more expensive than what most places charge. Overall though, a really great cheap eat in a central location. Definitely a favourite.

Gus’s: The Living Monument to “Yes It CAN be done!”

It should be flanked by statues of all those who opposed him, heads buried in the ground, bare buttocks exposed to park our bicycles in.
