Hi folks,

I need to get the following vaccinations for employment purposes, been checking up and asking around on where to get them done, besides to the GP. I’m also wondering if different GPs would charge different prices for them, and if so, where do you know would not charge sky high rates? Thanks in advance for your patience, I’m not very familiar with the ACT health system.

The Travel Doctor is not the only organisation that does vaccinations. Corporate Medical Options in Deakin also cover these vaccines. They are all on-site and able to be administered at the time of the appointment. The problem with going to a GP is that they do not always have the vaccines on-site, and you have to buy them from a pharmacy, then go back to the Doctor for them to inject.

CMO is located at Strickland Cres, Deakin. Follow the vaccination signs to the Peter Yorke Building

Thanks for that, but you should give him/her a quote for the vaccinations they listed in the OP, since you went to the trouble to reply with the CMO details. Then they could figure out if CMO meet their ‘cheapest place’ requirement mentioned in the OP title – without them having to contact you for that info (I notice the CMO website is scant on pricing)! Then we could all share in that knowledge too! 🙂

Yellow fever is controlled to the extent that only very few places can hand it out. the travel doctor is one and anyone specializing in travel medicine would be a good bet.

In the past I’ve used both my gp who often gives me a script to go purchase the vaccinations at the pharmacy and then return to have the injections. Also at the travel doctor, who surprisingly did not charge me for the free vaccinations, unlike some GP’s.

After my first OS trip I added pharmaceutical cover to my health fund. Still only get half back, but better than nothing.

Why not go to the sexual health clinic at the Canberra Hospital. They’ll be able to provide immunity shots for Hep A & B but not sure about the rest.

Here’s an immunity site for ACT Health you might be able to find more information there:

Very few people can do Yellow Fever – it requires some kind of special approval. So you won’t be able to get that one from your ordinary GP. Dr Paul Falk in Goulburn does it, if you don’t mind travelling, and the GP fee (not the fee for the vaccine itself) will be cheaper than the ACT. Plus, you won’t be told the books are closed. Just make sure you tell them what you want the appointment for so he has the Yellow Fever vax in stock.

So, 50% of people who went down that route (of vaccination) have Autism?

Shouldn’t your employer be paying for these?

This.

Yep, i’m sure you can get them all there, but from what friends have said, they are THE most expensive place to go!

The cost here is not the GP, but the vaccines themselves, since none of them will be covered by the Commonwealth or the state for adults (unless you’re under 30 – in which case MMR is free).

My advice would be to ring around the pharmacists and get some quotes for the costs of the vaccines; you’ll be surprised at the differences between different pharmacies. Then contact the Travel Doctor, which will have their own cost structure, and tell them what vaccines you want, and compare their quote with those of buying the vaccines themselves + the costs of going to a GP and them repeated visits for the vaccine courses. Many GPs will bulkbill the visits for the vaccine administration as they will be given by the practice nurse.

The only vaccine that can’t be directly purchased from a pharmacist on a script is yellow fever, and I’m a bit perplexed that you’ve listed it. Unless your work involves going to endemic areas of Africa or South America, you do not need to have yellow fever vaccination. Certainly you don’t need it for any job in Australia, and any workplace that required it is misleading you and asking you to get unnecessary medical treatment.
