Simon Corbell has welcomed a new Chief Justice to the ACT Supreme Court:

“I am pleased to join members of the ACT legal community to welcome Her Honour Chief Justice Helen Murrell SC to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory,” Mr Corbell said.

“Her Honour has more than 30 years of extensive experience in the legal profession and I have no doubt that she will provide strong leadership in the ACT Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Murrell SC has more than 17 years experience on the bench in NSW in both criminal and civil matters and more than 19 years experience as a solicitor and barrister practising in the areas of criminal law, administrative law, environmental law, common law and equity.

“The ACT Government has recently implemented a range of improvements in the administration of justice in the ACT. These improvements have seen the reduction in the number of reserved judgments in 2012-13, including a 47% reduction in the number of criminal matters older than 12 months waiting finalisation.

Chief Justice Murrell SC fills the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon Terrence Higgins AO who served in the position of Chief Justice since 2003 and as a Judge of the ACT Supreme Court since 1990.
