The ABC is reporting that Katy Gallagher is interested in why ACT petrol prices are as high as they are.

Averaging $1.39 per litre, Canberran petrol is more than 10 cents more expensive than that of Sydney.

Ms Gallagher has written into the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) asking them to look into anything that may contribute to the rising price of petrol in the ACT.

It’s price fixing by Coles and Woolies, what do people expect. Coles and Woolies have taken over the majority of petrol stations in Canberra.

Oh, I don’t know. The BP over at Jamo seems to be pretty competitive at the moment. And they’re not linked with any supermarket chain.

as long as there is no collusion.

How dare you even suggest something like that.

I believe that there has been an average of one inquiry into fuel prices per year for the last forty years. With all much the same out come. Price rises and falls, outside of taxation, are caused by demand and supply. Which is what this one will find.

I thought the sale of fuel here was de-regulated. So they can sell fuel for as much or as little as the Fuel companies like as long as there is no collusion. Supply and demand and what the consumer is willing to pay
I remember a while back when Fuel was reaching the dollar per litre mark then all of a sudden consumers slowed down their purchases and low and behold the price dropped a bit.

Haven’t they done this before, to no effect?

I think it’s high time the ACCC looked into this. At one stage not too long ago the ACT average was over 20 cents more than the Sydney counterparts.
