ABC Online is reporting that, despite talking tough all week, the Chief Minister has rolled over for the security services and begged to have his tummy tickled.

His media release on the subject is here.

I emerged from the high-level security briefing with the personal assurance of the chiefs of the Australian Federal Police, the Office of National Assessments and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation that their capacity to protect Australians in the new security environment would be compromised in the future without laws of this kind.

So the security services seeking the new powers presented the unverifiable evidence as to why they needed them? Please Mr. Stanhope, would you like to play poker with me?

At least there’s a 10 year sunset on this stuff. But I can’t see this nation being any less populated by snivelling bogans desperate for Big Brother to change our diapers by then.

Steve Pratt has welcomed the backflip.

Howard gets ASIO (or whoever does these briefings) to scare the crap out of all the state and territory leaders before the meeting and of course they’re going to roll over. I’m impressed they got the sunset clause – but I suspect Howard’s opposition to that was just an ambit claim anyway.

Just wish they’d remembered that these are the same goons that provided intel about the WMD threat.

The terrorist threat is a farce – it’s just straight out resistance to a foreign occupation – dating back to Gulf War 1

(I’m not saying that I don’t strongly oppose of the behaviour of either side, I just particularly object to the spin of it)

Maybe howard has agreed to the Independent State Of ACT and agreed that stanhope can be the innaugural emporer/president/overlord….. in return for his support on this

The Prat may be right about more Police. But said newbies really shouldn’t be pushing around the citizenry under the guise of Alert, but not alarmed. I am Alert, but Apathetic. I dont really care why or how we are going to protect ourselves from terrorism. There are bigger fish to fry than throwing up barriers and ensuring everyone fits into the ‘Australian’ ideal (That is, a card carrying member of the hapless conservative, ignorant upper class wankers sipping chardonnay applauding this decsion).

yeah, but he’s right.

We all know that Pratt’s suggestion will be “We need more Police in the ACT”: that’s all he ever bangs on about.

“What Mr Stanhope must now do is ensure all the ACT itself is prepared and procedures prepared for the Territory are in line with the agreement struck today nationally,” Mr Pratt said.
-Any suggestions, Pratters? Go on, make yourself useful.

Was there ever any doubt? John Howard always gets what he wants, one way or another. He’s a crafty little bastard.
