A woman confronted an offender in the driveway of her home in Chifley yesterday (Wednesday, October 12), and wrestled back her television set which had been stolen during the burglary.
Police were called to the residence around 10.15am yesterday, when the victim reported that she had returned to her home to find a man walking down her driveway carrying her TV. She confronted the man, who dropped the set and ran into the backyard.
The offender returned carrying a bag, which the victim recognised as her property. He got into the passenger’s side of a silver vehicle parked in the driveway. The victim grabbed the bag back and a tussle ensued, which led to the offender releasing the stolen property before being driven off.
Two people have been identified as persons of interest by ACT Policing’s Crime Targeting Team, and investigations are continuing.
Sergeant John Giles of the Crime Targeting Team said that while the victim’s actions were courageous, the concern of police was that such confrontation of offenders potentially placed the victim at risk.
“The view of police is that property can be replaced, but people can’t,” Sergeant Giles said.
“In this case, our victim acted on impulse and her actions did have a positive outcome. But we would prefer that in such situations, victims should avoid confrontation, immediately contact police on 131-444, or 000 in an emergency, and remember as much detail of the offenders and their vehicle as possible.”
