Hi all – do any of you Canberra folks know whether the traffic centre at Belco still runs?

I know it used to be an opportunity for little tackers to get out on their bikes and learn about give way signs etc. if anybody does know if it still operates, do you book through the police station or any other source? Could be a good opportunity in the school holidays.

Or am I so out of touch and didn’t know it closed years ago?

Thanks guys

Yep – there used to be one over in Deakin – if I recall – in the vicinity of where Geils Court is now. I went there in the mid 70’s with my fellow fourth graders from Downer Primary……..

Yes, where the Lidia Perin Memorial Hospital is now.

Oh yup – I’ve taught them all the safe things and we do our fair share of skills and drills (and the odd spill!) . I was just thinking about a fun day out riding round “roads” rather than getting splattered on real ones.

Mt Stromlo has a kids riding area which is pretty good with a picnic area etc. Went to a 4yo birthday party recently.

Was this the only kids cycle education centre in Canberra?

I recall a school related visit in the mid-late 80s, but vaguely thought it was in Phillip….

Cycle education run a Kids Bike Skills & Road Safety Course (for a fee). I think its aimed more at bike skills than road education, but my kids enjoyed it.

Yes, it closed a few years ago. A shame it is all just still sitting there – it looks very unsightly, as does much of that part of Belconnen Town Centre, unfortunately.

You can be sure that at some stage an ACT Government will decide that selling that land is a better option then re-funding a road safety campaign. Good thing we have those speed cameras to take care of road safety for us.

Thanks Nanzan – oh well – another good thing bites the dust. Guess we won’t go now.
