Chillis In Canberra

Now that its warming up I am looking to acquire some chilli plants to grow on my balcony. The problem is I can’t find any established plants or even seedlings.

I phoned a couple of the southside nurseries with no luck, and have looked online but don’t like the idea of shipping plants. So I am turning to the RiotAct for help!

Anyone have any Chilli plants I could take off their hands, or any leads to where to get some? I am after the plant itself, not seeds, and don’t really care what type they are. Even more so, should I bother attempting to grow them in our climate?

Thank you!!

If you’re looking for more information on plants, our recently updated article on the best nurseries in Canberra might be of help.

You could always find a chilli you liked, save a few seeds and plant your own?

Growing chillis from seed in Canberra is a frustrating business. You need your seed bed pretty warm to get them to germinate, and you need warmth to keep them growing. Those heated seed raising beds will work. I know people who do it but the amount of heat you need is considerable.

OTT, but does that only apply to chillis or to other stuff too? I germinated tomato seeds in punnets and they were going fine until, well until they started looking very sick really. My self-seeded ones in the garden are still going great guns though, so I suppose that indicates it’s little to do with temperature?

And that wasn’t really OTT, but it was OT.

So you’re saying that if I accidentally mixed up my chilli and capsicum seeds, the ones that have actually sprouted are probably capsicum?

Hi, Funny you should ask on the chilli seedling as of next Nov (2012) We will have seedlings.
Mostly the hotter species eg, trinidad scorpion & 7 pot. Our new green house is near complete.
We have sadly missed this years season but will be in full production as soon possible.
If there’s any particular species your after just let us know and we’ll do our best to provide as seedlings.

There’s chilli plants everywhere. I got a punnet of jalapenos from Bunnings back in August! Potted them on into big tubes and they went into the garden on the weekend (usually Melbourne Cup day on is safe from frosts). Best range of fancy advanced chillis (and tomatoes) I’ve seen is at that nursery in Qbn opposite the caravan park, they have a back room/glasshouse with a really good range of varieties.

Your not looking too hard. Magnet mart have had some for about a month. Rodneys at Pialligo had some when I was there about 2 weeks ago and The Garden at Parkwood had heaps at the weekend. In all cases multiple varieties.

We’ve grown chillis in our home garden and found they grew so well we had more than we knew what to do with. Still have heaps in the freezer. I think we got them from bunnings.

Have you tried Magnet Mart? That’s where I got mine last year. They had a couple of kinds. I managed to get some ball chilis that grew in all sorts of beautiful colours (purple, orange, green, red, yellow), as well as some Habaneros. They were hot.

Got mine last year from Yarallumla nursery. They had heaps

Yeah I already have, thet were the first lot to fail.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will have a look around!

Damn.. I hope you never have kids! 😀

Southside Farmers Markets, Woden CIT, Sunday. Look for the bloke with the plants in the courtyard near the sausage sizzle stall. He has well-established habaneros and jalapenos for $2 a pot. I got bumper crops of both the first year I brought plants from him, less so in the second year although that was true of tomatoes and capsicums as well. A couple of other market sellers also frequently have chilli seedlings.

You can get established ones for only a few dollars from one of the plant stalls at the bus depot markets

Try http://www.sgtpepper.com.au. He is based in Belconnen.

Still a bit early for advanced stuff, but why not support a local nursery rather than Bunnings (wesfarmers) or Magnet Mart (woolworths). I saw some at The Garden and Yarralumla Nursery on the weekend.

Yeah! I have some seedlings and they sprouted, after 5 days they were looking great and then out of nowhere they were drooped and brown! So I thought that having an established plant will give me a generous head start.

Hockey – No I don’t play, but am a fan of ice hockey!

Yeah I was at Bunnings last week and they had some jalapeno’s and habanero seedlings.

I’m currently trying to nurse last year’s plant back to health from its Near Death Experience, but it’s slow going. I left it outside for all of September while I was away overseas, figuring that it would die inside from lack of water anyway. It’s alive, but only just.

I always get my chilli seedlings from Bunnings, they had some there last week

It’s a bit early yet. My seeds only came up 2 weeks ago.

Bunnings will have hundreds of them soon.

Off topic, do you play hockey?
