Chinese builders busted in belco

The Canberra Times has story on a group of mostly Chinese construction workers feeling the wrath of a department of immigration raid yesterday.

Eight of those questioned were Chinese nationals, with one Thai and one South Korean man also questioned.

All of those transported to Villawood were Chinese nationals.

The nine men and one woman were working at a site at the corner of Ginninderra and Aikman drives, with most of them involved in tiling and plastering work.

While it was a St Hilliers site it will be sub-contractors catching it for the breaches.

And by popular demand here’s the South Park view of the immigration debate from the Season 8 Episode, Goobacks:

Lots of Asian workers worked on the new AG building in Barton – I recall wondering about it at the time as thought it was a bit suss – of course, they could also have been the 457 visa workers. . . .

A good friend of mine is in the tiling trade and constantly talks about asian workers coming in and undercutting their rates. He’ll be most pleased to hear about this, and hopefully its a sign of more raids to come.

My brothers work as tradies and he suffers the same problem. Cheap Chinese labour undercuts local workers, slowly but surely forcing them out of the industry.

There is a very simple way of stopping this sort of thing. The subbies employing workers without valid visa should get to stay in the same detention centre until the last worker is either successfully deported or if they claim asylum for whatever reason, their application is successful and they are released into the community.

Dammit. I need a plasterer.

What’s racist about it? A group of people were doing something illegal, and their nationality has bearing on the issue.

Yay for racism!

they were probably sleeping on site ,only got the job coz they quoted half what everyone else did and no questions were asked. I’m guessing they pissed off local tradies who losted that job and many more to groups just like that.

Probably.

Wonder what took ’em so long. When the internal fitout of the Glebe Park apartments was being done earlier this year, I would see this group of Asian plasterers/painters etc on my way to and from work every day. It never occurred to me that they might be illegal immigrants; rather a group of entrepreneurial types making their way in a new country. Guess the subbie who employed ’em was the entrepreneur and probably paid ’em lousy money to boot.

Aaron, I’m standing at the time border

where some kind of mass protest has

broken out. Hundreds of men who have

lost their jobs to time immigrants are

here having sex with one another. These

men have apparently sucked and screwed

their way across the state and are now

here at the time border trying to get

national attention. These unemployed

men have been having sex for several

days. Joining me is their spokesperson,

Randy Marsh. Mr. Marsh, what exactly

are you trying to accomplish?

When was the last time you were in Belconnen? the immigration campus is finished. now they occupy even more space then they did when they built their custom built single national office building.

I missed the word ‘raid’ which changes things slightly, but I still think the sentence is abysmal.

Yes, its ‘a’ raid, but how many Belconnen raids do they do in a single day? The DIAC’s Territory Office isn’t particularly large.

I would agree that it should be an ‘a’ instead of a ‘the’.
If it was a ‘The’ it would imply a singular raid (like an annual, planned even), rather than ‘a’ raid, which would read to me, as one of many that may occur.

Thats just wong.

“a department of immigration”?
