WIN’s Luke Dufficy has tweeted that it’s been Chris Bourke forced to make way for Shane Rattenbury in the Labor Ministry.

The price of power.

UPDATE 05/11/12 14:03: Chris Bourke’s statement is no available:

It has been a privilege to serve as a minister in the 7th Assembly, especially as the first Aboriginal Minister in the ACT Government.

I look forward to continuing to represent the people of Belconnen and West Gungahlin in the Ginninderra electorate and working hard for them over the next four years. We must remember the Labor team won every booth in Belconnen in the election.

When a sixth ministry is created, I will be pushing for the opportunity to deliver progressive, evidence-based policy to make Canberra an even better city.

Maybe this is a new Labor policy: ‘No Aboriginal MLAs by 2016’? 🙂

Hmm. As we all know politics can be…..Not what we expected hey!

A tad unexpected is the extra jab of putting Shane “Deep South” Rattenbury in the black issues portfolio, having mercilessly booted out the black incumbent.

Obviously the blackfella gets to ride at the back of the bus from now on! Nice work ACT Labor…..

Labor strategic thinking in action? Do they think a Shane “Deep South” Rattenbury impression might stick, to their advantage? Don’t expect a Greens/Labor alliance to be comfortable in any jurisdiction.

It’s so cute that you’re still here stamping your little feet in protest.

Even worse, it means Joy Burch and Corbell both stay. I was really hoping one of them would get the flick.

Yes, I was looking forward to a Corbell-free political landscape altogether. What a shame Meegan couldn’t secure the final Labor seat in Molonglo.

Well think about it – the Speaker can’t vote on general votes. They have a casting vote, but convention is the vote is always cast for the status quo.
ALP need the numbers to govern, and governing means making changes so the status quo is no good. So the Speaker role goes to Liberal. Otherwise, everything would be 8:8.

The speaker can vote in general votes, I think its actually called a deliberative vote, just like every other member. He/She does not have a casting vote either.

This is right. S161 of the standing orders, if you want to check.

Righto. I stand corrected.

Cmon Al, weren’t you running for this assembly? Or are you secretly pushing.for change on the speakers vote? Would be a bit more interesting although mostly futile if they had the casting vote.

I was certainly hoping Ms Burch got the flick.

She was saved only because she has Ms in front of her name.
I saw her last week – politics must be hard because she has aged 20 years according to her election sign photos that were all over Tuggeranong last month.

Yep, whilst a totally incompetent Birch still keeps the keys to child safety. Still hasn’t explained how kids were kept in an unheated house, no hot water, and no beds, with broken glass on the floor.

ACT Labor need to do some explaining.

Not good news. It means Belconnen has no Minister – so no one in Cabinet where the real decisions are made. I guess that’s what we deserve for loyal, unquestioning support that gives them more seats without even much of a campaign.

Any word on the Speaker? Perhaps that’s where Bourke is headed?

I don’t know why they didn’t just expand the ministry by one member – surely that’s one of the advantages of bringing Rattenbury in (and having an extra Labor MLA too). I had the feeling that the existing ministry was stretched a little thinly.

Liberals are taking the speakership which is a bit of a blow to Labor.

Vicki Dunne is the tip.

I heard a bit about this on the radio this morning. Katy was saying that obviously you would look to a junior minister to vacate a position. My immediate thought was why not ease someone out who had a woeful result from the election, who should have done better given their history and level of responsibility…Corbell perhaps? Might make his exit from Government easier when the time comes.
