Christmas Eve Restaurants... Anyone out there?

This year it seems that Christmas eve coincides with a Monday.

It looks like every restaurant in town is closed for dinner, and most for lunch.

I am looking for a nice place to go with a group, and I am sure I am not alone – does anyone know of somewhere that is open for dinner, looking for quality food, with a couple of vegetarians to cater for.

It’s the saltiness combined with the sweetness of the syrup that makes it good.

Have you ever had salted caramel? Delicious.

My husband and daughter both love salted licorice, which is a taste he inherited from his Dutch father. Personally, I think that it tastes like a runner’s armpits on the hottest day in summer, but to each his own. It is really something I can’t tolerate.

Salted caramel is bad too, though not as bad as salted licorice.

Fair enough, I won’t assault your tastebuds anymore.

Why not…

Make some pancakes?
Make some bacon pancakes!
You get some bacon and you put it in a pancake,
Bacon pancakes, that’s what you’re gonna make,
BA-CON PANCAAAAAAAKES!

Cold smoked bacon, stacked with light, fluffy flapjacks, with banana and maple syrup.

That sounds absolutely horrible. I’ve never understood the attraction of sweetness with bacon.

But I intend to have my first beer in nearly a year at Christmas. So roll on Christmas.

Plus, Bacon is its own food group and can be eaten at any time of day with anything else and always is fantastic.

+1
I vote we officially declare bacon a food group in all national health promotions.

To be honest, neither did I. Then my wife introduced me to it, using the right amount of syrup. You don’t drown it, just add a dash. The flavours combine well. If you want to see how well these flavours can go together, you can try a smoked beer like Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen. Although, if you haven’t had a beer in a while, I’d leave it for another day 🙂

Oh, I should have said Southern US place or perhaps Southern North American?

I didn’t think you had a tennessee to correct yourself.

Sorry, I was a bit preoccupied with my mate Ken, tuckying in to some grub, with my Missis sipping on some reds and whites with blue cheese on the side.

Oh, I’ve got to go, me old wog mate Con Federate has just arrived.

Justice Elena Kagan at her US Supreme Court confirmation hearings: when a senator asked her where she was on Christmas, she said, “You know, like all Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant.”

(why asking someone where they are at Christmas is a legitimate question at all is a different issue. I suspect its code for ‘hey y’all, this women aint really a good Christian’)

Thanks everyone for the input and the prosletising on both sides of the fence. Seasalt is open and that’s where we’ll be. Thanks MonarchRepublic (are you hoping to be the monarch?).

The hard working chinese care mostly not a jot for christmas so that’s where I’d be looking.

Since JB brought this up, I’ll just throw this in.

I’m spending Christmas day (this is post-Christmas eve rubbing shoulders, raw, with the family) with friends by going to Cabramatta in Sydney.

In my past experience the whole suburb is crowded with people who are looking to shop around, as well as lunch and dine, without concerning themselves with religious observation of which the date is questionable even within that religion.

AMEN to multiculturalism in oz. (fyi, I’m an Atheist).

Amen to multiculturalism indeed. (I’m a Christian, for the second year in a row.)

(The date doesn’t matter, you know. It’s just the idea or metaphor of perfect love in human form that counts. if I can have that with wontons, I’ll be a very happy woman.)

God bless us, every one!

You could probably start a thread about the parlous state of your shoulders, you know.

Just as the IGA’s tend to be open Christmas (have a look at how many are run by Greeks, Christmas is a January thing), good Chinese and Vietnamese get the same thing.

I’m not sure of that. My favourite asian restaurants seem to embrace the favoured Aussie Christmas tradition of closing down for a good 2 or 3 weeks while the majority of the city is down at the coast,

Nor perhaps for Christmas penalty rates (not that those actually apply on the eve) … : (

I’d give seasalt dining, on Braybrooke street in Bruce a call. They’re normally open Mondays anyway, and I know they are open Christmas day already, so would be surprised if they were shut christmas eve. Seafood and steak are fantastic, plus they do a few really nice vegetarian dishes. Plus if you give him notice, the chef can usually organise alternatives. Note – I believe the menu has changed a little from that listed on the web, as I didn’t see the scampi entree on it last time I checked online.

Smoque, the Southern American place in Civic is open.

Vegetarians eat ribs, pulled pork and sloppy joes right?

Seriously though, I think they do a vegetarian burger and a heap of different salads as well.

wooley street, dickson.

or the tradies..?

Suggestion from the office hive mind: Queanbeyan McDonalds has a sign up saying they’ll be open.
