The ABC reports that ANU’s former Vice Chancellor Ian Chubb has been given the nod to be the next Chief Scientist of Australia.

His predecessor, Penny Sackett, resigned part-way through her term earlier this year for “personal and professional” reasons, revealing she had not been asked to brief Julia Gillard since she became Prime Minister.

Professor Chubb says he will be a strong advocate for the science and research sector and will be advising on a broad range of science and research issues, including climate change.

UPDATE: Julia Gillard’s media release is now online.

There’s the rub. Chubb’s good, but when you’re faced with a gubmint of scientific illiterates a phillistines, there’s not much that anyone can do.

Professor Chubb says he will be a strong advocate for the science and research sector and will be advising on a broad range of science and research issues, including climate change.

this is more or less what penny sackett said, too. it is more or less expected that a new incumbent would make such a proclamation; one wonders if chubb can get much done in his tenure – we shall wait and see.

Not only did Julia Gillard not meet with Professor Sackett, but as I understand it from the Senate Estimates transcripts, Gillard didn’t even attend PMSEIC this year even the the meeting date had been set months and months prior. Considering how important the two reports presented were this year, I would imagine that would have been a harsh blow… 🙁

Although I have to say, that the way the ABC frames it, Professor Sackett said that Gillard not meeting her was a reason for resigning, although she actually said no such thing. It can certainly be interpreted that way, but she did not link the two together.
