CIT Graduation bollixed by technology glitch

In a bit of a FUBAR for an Institute of Technology CIT has announced they can’t do their planned March graduation ceremony.

CIT is completing a major upgrade of our Student Information Management System, and I regret to inform you that technical issues have been discovered in the new system.

These issues have had a direct impact on the processing of student records required for CIT’s graduation ceremony in March 2011, and as a result it will not be possible for CIT to process graduation applications in time.

I very much regret that CIT will have to postpone the March 2011 graduation ceremony to October 2011 in order to overcome these issues.

I would like to extend my sincere apologies to all students for this situation and I assure you the decision to postpone the ceremony was not made lightly. Affected students are being notified as a matter of priority and staff will be available to answer all queries they may have.

Students planning to use their diplomas to get jobs can apparently get by on their transcripts.

Otherwise they’ll just have to wait to October.

provided all students can get a graduation certificate/transcript now (so they can start work), sounds ok. bit embarrassing though

There is a proposal for CIT to join Canberra University. I suggest their new name be Southern Highland Institute Technological University.

I would love it in these sorts of cases, if the company responsible for a failed IT project could get prominent publicity for their involvement.

What we see is time and time again the same dysfunctional IT companies being awarded government contracts over and over despite a proven track record of non-performance.

Ever worked on a government IT project? It’s pretty rare that the problems are entirely on one side…

Agreed. On the govt side its common to get unrealistic timelines, budgets, resource constraints, etc. The IT companies aren’t perfect, of course, but govt can be a difficult client.

CIT systems are controlled/run/maintained by INTACT who are controlled/run/maintained by Shared Services, if these two have anything to do with it, it will never work – just look at the ACT Guv pay system.

A service shared is a service lost.

Do ACT government agencies actually test new systems and changes before going live?

That depends on your definition of ‘test’

Develop, deploy, destroy, panic, rollback, repeat.

New students and continuing students are currently being disadvantaged by this issue. As are their teachers.

I can attest to this. Its pretty inconvenient on a first day to not know whether you are even enrolled and having to chase people up to get it sorted.

You think they have draconian administrators?

Just try the Coffee…

“I can assure you that apart from the delay in ceremony, no student will be disadvantaged by this issue.”

Really? This “issue” is a lot greater than graduating students.

New students and continuing students are currently being disadvantaged by this issue. As are their teachers.

FUBAR? Har har har…that brings back a lot of memories. 🙂

CIT quality for CIT, by the sound of it.

Is this an early April Fools joke?

CIT is plagued with administrative issues. S’no surprise really.
