Citizenship Place added to the lakeside

The National Capital Authority has announced a new milestone in its ongoing quest to ensure that every square inch of Canberra is a memorial or monument to something.

The latest breakthrough is “Citizenship Place”.

The first part is a funny benchy looking thing with bits of yellow plastic stuck on somewhat in the manner of a timeline. (Any bets on how long they last?).

Then, on the other side of a jetty, footpath, and life saving buoy is a concrete embankment with the citizenship oath embossed on the topside.

Apparently this is the fist section of the “RG Menzies Walk”. So we can expect more civics lessons wrapped up with architectural oddities in the months to come.

Doesn’t a retaining wall hold stuff in?

The cement retaining wall is holding something in, the wooden thingy isn’t so much a retaining wall as a barrier.

Looks amazing! Cant wait to see the rest of the walk.

Another plus for the retaining-wall-of-oath… (retaining wall of keeping those foreigners out?) but the little wooden bumps look pretty unimaginative. Sure the artist may have wanted to put rather large mountainous-like structures as a metaphor to just how hard it is to get into Australia/residency/citizenship, but was consequently censored.

aren’t the bumps to stop skateboarders and rollerbladers grinding on it ? 😉

housebound: Good thing it’s not your money building the bridge, then (the proposed Immigration Bridge is funded by donations).

That’s true, but surely it should be part of the risk assessment for a particular project with the associated stategies and resources factored in.

Wood and plastic are not the hardiest of materials after all.

It’s a sad world when the risk of vandalism starts to make us fearful of building things.

I kind of like it. It’s certainly different, and I also like that they’ve got the oath inscribed.

I do share JB’s concerns about vandalism. If it gets broken, burned, ‘graffiti-ed’ or rundown it will look pretty horrid, especially if they don’t fix or replace it quickly.

Doesn’t really matter where it is. It’s much better value for money than that silly bridge.

One would have thought it would make sense to have plonked this monument over on the Museum side of the lake. Well, that’s assuming the Immigration Bridge is still going ahead.

I kinda like the cement wall with the oath inscribed in the top of it. But the gravel around the brown thing is going to make it really hard for me to ride my skateboard on it…..
