His Chiefliness (Long May He Reign) has declared an end to the road works blighting Civic these past months:

Two of Canberra’s busiest roads, Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit, have undergone major safety improvements and maintenance with $7.6 million road works now complete, Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, said today.

“Almost 43,000sqm of road have been resurfaced,” Mr Stanhope said. “Footpaths and on-road cycle paths have been upgraded and new on-road cycle paths have been constructed on sections of London Circuit.

“This work represents a significant investment in the safety and maintenance of these busy roads. Around 60,000 vehicles use Northbourne Avenue each day, while 20,000 vehicles use London Circuit.”

Mr Stanhope said the Government fast-tracked the works to minimise the disruption to road users.

Works were scheduled overnight and on weekends and lane closures were kept to off-peak times.

One is sure cycle paths on “sections” of London Circuit will be immensely appreciated.

You haven’t been out there have you…

Yep, those cycle lanes are very bizarre, beginning and ending in nothingness.

There’s a lot of that around. Southern Cross Drive has a cycle lane that starts with no way to safely reach it, and ends with a cycle lane with no way to safely exit it – meaning that the ‘section’ of cycle lane is rendered entirely useless.

Same sentiments from me on the new cycle-path on London Cct, which leads into the back of a parked car in front of Bendigo Bank. Now, cars are less sympathetic and won’t give me some space to get around the parked car, as I have a… dedicated cycle-path (to nowhere)! They’re just jealous…

It’s actually discouraging to see roads form potholes only a week after resurfacing it. This was on the corner of Northbourne and Elouera. Hope the ACT govt has a warranty for these new roads, ’cause they may need to make use of it in a hurry.

The cycle lanes are useless and not used, and the only thing achieved is making the vehicle lane too thin to fit a bus. Someone will get knocked off one day with that ridiculous design.

The new surface is nice, but they haven’t resurfaced the whole road, with some sections not touched at all. What is more ridiculous is that the section outside the police station is only 2/3 done, with a patch up job with tar done on the parking section. Lazy work.

Yep, those cycle lanes are very bizarre, beginning and ending in nothingness. You’d think with $7.6 million in funding there would be money left over for a bit more road paint.

As for ‘pavement rehabilitation’ I haven’t noticed any difference, other than the initial disruption. Money well spent.

Th name “on-road cycle-path is a little misleading” since they are just the usual lanes which buses will cover when the turning. But “sections” is correct, they start and end in the middle of nowhere with no connection to footpaths or anything.

Blighted? I think it’s been handled quite well, with minimal disruption during peaks in particular. And the new surface is sweet.

You want blighted, come out around the Gungahlin roadworks. Pick a road – any road.
Some of it seems to be nearing an end at last though.
