ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a burglary which occurred in the vacant building next door to the Uni Pub last weekend.

Sometime between noon on Friday (September 30) and the morning of Tuesday (October 4) offenders gained entry to the ground level of the building on London Circuit.

The offenders forced open an ATM and left the building taking a large amount of cash.

AFP Forensics attended the scene and examined the extensively damaged ATM. ACT Policing is investigating a number of leads in relation to the incident.

Police urge anyone who was in the London Circuit area and witnessed suspicious activity, such as the forced entry to a building, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Sounds like “The Bank Job”. I wonder if they did this during the day, arrived as trades people, made a heap of noise as you would expect from a group of trades people, then drove away in a work truck.

I know this building, and the ATM (assuming it’s the one I think it is) is built into the end of wall of it facing into a walkway into that Hobart Place Courtyard. Poorly lit, minimal line of sight from anywhere and not a high traffic location after hours. And now there’s construction fencing all around blocking any view of it from the street. Whoever allowed an ATM to be put there is an idiot.

I thought it was a very strange place to put an ATM when they first installed it, in a practically abandoned building, away from the club and in a fairly dark area. Although, there is quite a bit of CCTV coverage in that area.. They might get lucky..

Well it certainly wouldn’t be hard to get into that building at the moment. It’s being gutted for the new Uni Pub development, and looks like many of the windows have been boarded up. Take one building under renovation, presumably with no alarm system active, with access to an ATM from the inside (an ATM that I’ve rarely ever seen in use too), and chances are an enterprising crim is going to see easy money.

Ballsy though – the main Civic police station is practically over the road. That’s gotta be a bit embarrassing for the police!
