Civic Centre Railway shots

Peter sent us these fun shots of Canberra from yesteryear.

To mis-answer Merc’s question about pictures of the railway in Garema place, see “fig 2-14 panorama.jpg”

According to my copy of “Canberra’s Engineering Heritage” (2nd ed, 1990, isbn 0 85825 496 4), the railway from Queanbeyan skirted the east basin of LBG, along what is now Parkes Way near Kings Avenue, crossing ANZAC Parade and Constitution Avenue and going through Reid, into Garema place and along Lonsdale to a terminus.

Unfortunately, the flood of 1922 destroyed the bridge over the Molonglo “…and it was never rebuilt”.

Excellent excuse to link to what is arguably the Worst Poem Ever:

The Molonglo River bridge looks like a way cool rollercoaster ride.

Thanks for your research. The article has a link that shows the siding inCivic, just after the rail lines were removed.

I believe the railway line passed along what is now the treed area between the CIT and Amaroo St in Reid. Its also why there’s the large gap between Mort St and the blocks on its western side (which is now mostly off-street parking).

Well thanks to Peter for his research. I had read the rail continued into Civic, but these are the first photos I have seen. Thanks agin.

Wow, I never knew that, great pics. Thank you.

If the stingy buggers had rebuilt it we’d have a railway to the city now. Shame really.

We would also be able to travel to Melbourne by rail without having to be bussed to Yass or Coota to connect with the train coming from Sydney.

If the stingy buggers had rebuilt it we’d have a railway to the city now. Shame really.
