Just before Christmas I noticed the new street signs in Civic and have now captured a speciment to share with you all.

New Street Sign on Petrie Plaza

Looks good, the addition of street numbers is most welcome and well overdue. We can only hope they weather gracefully.

Are these going to be rolled out to the rest of Canberra? And if so will the signs that get taken down be put up for auction?

The new street signs in Civic look fantastic I think. But why oh why did it take so long for the capital city of Australia to get distintive steet signs for its city centre?

Also, not all intersections in Civic have the signs yet…it this a gradual rollout, or was the budget to stingy to cover all of Civic’s streets – large and small?

Now, if we could only get the NCA to even put up (or replace) street signs at many of the intersections in the Parliamentary Zone! That would be an achievement.

It’s Civic, not Canberra City! “Canberra City” is Kate Carnell speak.

As to the logo, I could be mistaken but I think it was the winner of a competition some years ago (in which I entered and failed miserably) which was open to primary and high school and college students as well as an open category. I’m pretty sure they said the winner of the open category would be used around Civic, but, having seen no evidence of this for some months after the competition, I promptly forgot all about it.

well, city is what appears on the map – civic is just a colloquial name. (to be replaced, if our government is to be believed, by “canberra central”.)

i noticed one (or at least one) of these new signs is actually incorrect. it points up lonsdale st and still says “city”. but lonsdale st is braddon, not city. *tsk, tsk*

persevere i mean.

i note that they perseve with city vice civic

Yeah, given the “Canberra Central” logo I suspect that these street signs are specifically designed to make Civic look more spiffy.

Maybe I’m just jaded, but I don’t find the logo offensive — I assume that *any* re-branding exercise will be accompanied by a postmodern logo of squiggles and bold colors, eg:

Sydney 2000 Olympics
BHP Billiton

Oh, is THAT what that logo is? I thought it was a fat person in a bumpa-boat!

The truly scary thing is that it probably wasn’t designed by a Yr 8 student, but rather by a Graphic Designer who was paid something like $25,000 for doing so.

Agreed, they look good, except for that stupid and amateurish “Canberra Central” logo on the right. That think looks like it was designed by a kid in a year 8 art and design class. It is craptastic.
