Civic Library closed for the duration

By johnboy - 5 March 2007 6

John Hargreaves has announced that the damage to the Civic Library is so bad that it might be closed another two weeks following last week’s storms.

“Water damage from rain and hail occurred when it broke through ceiling panels and flowed under doors, soaking carpets, books, equipment, and electrical wiring in several areas of the library,” said Mr Hargreaves.

“Over 1000 litres of water was removed in the initial cleanup, and assessment and further cleanup of the damage is continuing. Replacement of carpet on the lower ground floor is likely…

“At present, it is uncertain when the library will be fully operational, however it is hoped that limited services will be available within a fortnight.

High roofs people, high roofs prevent this sort of thing AND provide an attic.

UPDATED: The CT’s rising star, Diana Streak, has more on this with the Greens asking why the Section 84 development seems the hardest hit and justifiably asking if Simon Corbell’s buddies at QIC have done a great job. QIC say they’ve built in compliance with all the codes and Simon says they codes are great.

What’s Your opinion?

Surely the building standards are just fine, just as Simon says. After all, they’ve proven their worth in the last month… haven’t they?

As I said day after the storm: Is it really so hard for engineers to design roofs that actually keep the water out???
Evil – is right – box gutters in areas that get hail or snow is just asking for trouble.

QIC says the buildings “are of the highest possible quality”. LMAO!

freak downpours. these things happen, and will only get worse as butcher our environment. Centralise ACT record service to the top of telstra-yama and there wont be flooding prblem, simple.

Internal box guttering: the downfall of many buildings after heavy hail.

Thumper 8:13 am 06 Mar 07

Sloped roof, big bloody gutters, large and many downpipes….

Simple really…

I hope this doesn’t give them the opportunity to close it down.
