Chief Minister Gallagher is gleefully reporting that the Civic recycling bins (once they got explanatory signage) are indeed getting the punters putting their junk in the right hole.
ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, today acknowledged the success of the Civic recycling bin trial with approximately 16,000 kilograms of recycling collected since the program began in November 2011.
The trial was initiated after surveys found 40 per cent of the rubbish in Civic waste bins could be recycled.
“In 2011, the ACT Government committed $165,000 to the installation of 37 new recycling bins around City Walk, Garema Place and the City Bus Station,” the Chief Minister said.
“The stainless steel recycling bins were installed next to existing waste bins with appropriate signage to indicate which ones are to be used for recyclable waste and are located at sites where recycling had been identified as being most effective.
“Monitoring of the recycling bins showed that less than eight per cent of rubbish disposed was non-recyclable in nature. It is great to see that not only were the bins used but that they were used correctly.
