Civil Engineering concerns floating around TAMS for 18 months?

The Liberals’ Alistair Coe is very excited by FOI documents from Territory and Municipal Services highlighting “concern regarding the quality of design documentation for the ACT Government civil engineering projects”.

‘This has been an ongoing issue for some time. In late 2006 discussions were held between TAMS and Procurement Solutions in regard to this matter. Since this time other matters have taken priority and things seem to have stalled.’ – Oakton Internal Audit Report, pg 13, 07/08

It would be worrying enough on its own if they weren’t still scraping wreckage off the Barton Highway.

So JC, how many experienced bridge formwork engineers does the ACT Gov employ to ‘monitor the design and construction process’?

And what inspections did they do before the concrete pour?

We’re not asking for micro-management but we do expect that stuff is built correctly, safely and so that it doesn’t fall down in five years time…..And only a properly resourced Government building inspection team can ensure this simple request is met.

Well that would be all very will if the guvmnt was in the game of micro-managing contracts, but I believe his chiefliness explained that the documents don’t actually form part of any engineering specs, they are simply administrative documents outlining tender and contract prices and oversight of the project from an admin point of view. The guvmnt can and does monitor design and construction processes but in reality it is mostly up to ‘experienced’ engineers and builders under contract to do it right.

Which is exactly the way it should be too.

Don’t worry, Alistair’s out there holding up the bridge himself to facilitate traffic…Alistair Alistair he’s our man if he can’t do it no one can…..onya A.
