Civil war at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra?

The Canberra Times has an interesting story on ructions in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) surrounding their well received pops concerts.

One of Canberra’s artistic sacred cows, conductor Ian McLean, appears to have been shafted at short notice by members of the board.

The CSO board announced in its glossy brochure presented at a sponsors’ lunch this week that in 2010 the ”Pops Orchestra is taking a break while the CSO prepares fresh new Pops concerts for the future”.

Mr McLean said he was told only last Thursday that they were ”going to print in this brochure, without consulting me, that they were going to suspend the Pops.

”I said this was a ridiculous decision and [that I would] go and get a sponsor myself. They said it’s too late, we’ve already printed the brochure.”

Some real potential for tears before bedtime here methinks.

a scrag fight with the backing soundtrack of the 1812 Overture?

Defence used to do something similar a few years ago, and it was very popular. Ian McLean was their conductor back then. He’s done a lot of work to support development of popular classical music in Canberra, would be a shame if CSO weren’t supportive of his work. And I bet Ian McLean could get a sponsor if they let him try it.

CSO management has made a number of questionable decisions recently, some of them quite costly. Who knows to what degree board members were informed, and if they were they don’t seem to be concerned by public opinion. Ian McLean has a lot of supporters, I count myself among them.

If there is enough support in the community for these events, then the niche will be filled elsewhere by any number of other orchestras/bands in the region. Im sure duntroon would be happy enough to do a pop-style concert, if theyd get the numbers and the cash inflow that CSO wants to throw away. Once the money flows away the CSO might reconsider their decision.
