You lot tend to dig old photos of Canberra, and so do we.

Here’s some great shots that Rioter john sent us:

Herewith attached – rescanned 110 size negatives – hence the colour issues.

2 shots at the top of black mountain with the tower under construction – note the “safety” railing around the platforms.

1 shot taken from the black mountain lookout facing east over the National Botanic Gardens towards Russell – note the lack of buildings on london circuit.

2 shots of black mountain from a distance showing the old steel lattice towers in place, one from outside the National Library and the other from Black mountain peninsula – check out the lack of parkes way/glenloch

Telecom was a better name. Don't tell them I said that. They'll get upset. They worked so hard on their new image. You've got to encourage behaviour like that.

There is always the National Film and Sound Archive’s effort called Imagining Canberra for some old images.

They look good for 110 sized negatives, and interesting to see Black Mountain as it was then.

As for other historical images, it doesn’t look like there was unified effort to gather images of Canberra as it’s changed. Off hand I could think of the NLA’s book and exhibition “Canberra Then and Now”, which is interesting, but perhaps modest effort:

Also the Mildenhall collection, with comparative photos. This has featured here previously:

Otherwise it’s whatever random collections can be found on the web. For example, http://photos.naa.gov.au/ you can search for Canberra and get some photos back. Similarly looking at the photo archives at http://www.images.act.gov.au/ can reveal interesting subjects, including early photos of some of the suburbs.

great work. Shame as part of the centenary we didnt have an extensive collection of photos of canberra, at least if not on exhibition, published in a book. Something like the suburbs over time, the construction and changes to landmarks such as the tower etc. I think there are a few canberrans out there who have something valuable (such as this) that the canberra community would be interested in.

Maybe there is something out there, would be happy to be pointed in the direction of it if this is the case.

Great photos. Surprising how rare photos of the tower under construction are! Remember in the 70s in a Melb architect firm the bloke sitting across had all the models, drawings etc for the (then) Canberra PMG Tower.

Awesome photos. Love seeing 1950s to 70s Canberra.

I scored some 1960s or 70s war memorial slides from the Green Shed the other day, which show Capital Hill sans any building, and are in colour. Hoping to get hold of a slide scanner and run them through.

Add more instagram filters.

it was a 180B from memory : )

Check out the flairs (probably cords) and (what appears to be) the 120Y.

Nice pics. Thanks
