The Australian National University has the good news that their Classics Museum has re-opened after an extensive refurbishment.

Speaking at the official launch of the new museum last week ANU Chancellor, Professor the Hon Gareth Evans said the museum provides the broader public with the opportunity to engage with our ancient Mediterranean heritage.

“With this splendid refurbishment, the Classics Museum will take its rightful place as one of the University’s cultural jewels, and a place which many visitors to Canberra will want to visit,” said Professor Evans.

If you’ve got an interest in ancient Greece and Rome it’s well worth a visit for Canberra residents too. It can be found in the AD Hope building, just off University Avenue if memory serves.

Yes, the new Museum looks good. After its near-death experience a few years ago, ANU Classics has really got itself together. New courses and enthusiastic staff have led to increased enrollments.

Of the other denizens of the A. D. Hope Building, Anthropology also prospers, but Archaeology continues to decline. Some staff seem more interested in their own research rather than teaching, so course offerings decline to such a situation that it becomes hard to put together enough units to make up anything more than a mickey-mouse degree- if indeed the units end up being offered, given the declining enrollments. Could it be that this is a great way to encourage students to go elsewhere, and leave staff more time for research?

It’s a very impressive fit out and worth seeing.

I remember visiting the scale model of Rome when I was a kid – which is still there.

It’s building 14 – http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=ef32

Parking can be tight in peak student times so best to park in Civic (University Avenue) and walk over.

Yes, the new museum looks excellent, see it now while it still contains the really cool bronze cavalry helmet on loan from the Nicholson museum.
