Clea Rose as convenient distraction?

The ABC informs us that Our Brave Leader, Jon Stanhope, is going to order an inquest into the death of Clea Rose in the wake of coronial dis-interest in the case. Also the Canberra Times is on the story.

A desperate attempt to get school closures off the front page? Or a genuine desire to explore the issues surrounding police pursuits?

Thumper: F*&K yeah! Comin’ along to save the motherf*&king day yeah.

I think we should arm the police with bazookas to blow the shit out of anyone who tries to get away…(oh sorry, I forgot it was Cynical Thursday).

I think as a fundamental, if people run from the police, the police need to find out why.

That comes at a cost and I think an inquiry and examination of the costs need to be looked at.

But many criminals ARE stupid enough to drive suspiciously and if they can get away by exceeding the speed limit they will.

Pandy, It has been pointed out to many people on this site that the Police in the ACT now are the same ones you will get under any other system. ACT Police and a bunch of other agencies formed the AFP in the first place.

Chris S – If you were a hoon and knew that if you drove a certain way so that Police would not chase/catch you, I reckon it would be the first place you would go.

If Sonic wants control over the plod, he should get his own rather than the rent a mob he has now.

He certainly could have done this earlier, but he didn’t need the smokescreen back then.

I think that probably Clea’s family and supporters have finally made an impact, and as noted above, the timing is probably right for Stanhope.

Those calling for an inquest are rightly pointing out that there needs to be some investigation into the way in which Police handle car chases.

I’m of the view that, in this case, the cops probably did the right thing. However, regular reviews of SOPs should always happen after something goes wrong; it’s also important that this is done in public.

I think the AFP’s claim that doing so would alert the baddies to what they can get away with is a bit of a furphy – these incidents are not planned, and each set of circumstances are different, so the hoons would not be able to have a pre-set strategy in place.

It’s being reported on breaking news at news.com.au that sad simon is investigating whether he has the powers to order a coronial inquest.

But the report in the crimes has the mayor saying he will order one and override the coroner’s office.

More incompetence? Left hand not knowing what the right is doing?
