Coe weeps for the Majura Parkway bike path

Amongst the things I never thought I’d see is a media release from the Liberals’ Alistair Coe denouncing the scrapping of the promised Majura Parkway off-road bike path.

“While riding on the road always poses a risk, it is especially dangerous on high volume, high speed roads.

“That’s why these segregated bike paths are so important. They are parallel to roads but are separated from car traffic, so are as direct as on-road paths but much safer.

“Such paths are preferable for cyclists and motorists.

“I call on Katy Gallagher to explain why she has back-flipped on her promise to provide this important safe bike path,” Mr Coe concluded.

Better late to the party than to never arrive we suppose.

May as well try and court a few bike riders before the election, eh? Some of them may be fooled.

But anyone paying attention for the last few years will know how negative Coe and his liberal buddies really are about cycling.

Remember him complaining about the amount it costs to pay for the green paint in cycle lanes?

The other thing of course is that this is also courting car drivers, and there’s probably an element of ‘the roads belong to the cars, the bikes belong somewhere else’ to this.

Spot on. The whole path would service the insanely small amount of cyclists living in the top end of Gungahlin that work at the airport and choose to ride. I find it odd that it was even proposed in the first place.

Hmm. Has finally understood that the more people who can safely and efficiently use alternative travel methods, the better the roads are for those who have to drive? Or jumping on to an issue for the sake of having another shot at the government?

You choose…

Given that it follows a road, you’re saying that Majura Parkway goes from nowhere to nowhere?

Apart from the obvious users – Gungahlinites commuting to the airport + Fyshwick, it would also be useful for access to Mountain Biking at Majura Pines.

My own experience is riding that road (which has no shoulder) + lots of cars + heavy trucks + roos playing in traffic = quite “interesting”

I too am bemused at hearing the Libs call a bike path “important.” A back-flip of their own?

Spot on!

Yes, the entire expanse of Canberra really is nowhere, in the middle of nowhere.

Or, the cycle path links up the same places that the road will since it, you know, will run along side it.
