Have moved jobs to Fyshwick – can’t find any decent coffee here.

Tried several like Pelligrinos, the Harley place, Buzz but all very average.

Does anyone know a good coffee place??

That Ona coffee place has opened in Fyshwick across the street from Kapital kebabgs and Elaines. Had coffee and a burger there and it was quite nice. That said the Fyshwick cafe & bakery next door to the kebab shop also does much better than expected coffee and you get a biscuit with your coffee.

International roast all the way. With UHT cream.

Mmmmmmmmm.

You don’t write for Penthouse do you, rony?

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster (finally have something to contribute)… a little review of a new coffee place in fyshwick…

Well I’m always in and out of fyshwick for business and noticed Ona’s new cafe on Wollongong street and, seeing people sitting out front, I decided to pop in and have lunch/coffee. I gotta admit I was pretty impressed by the coffee, food and overall setup at their roastery!

Rather than getting a normal coffee I noticed a fancy contraption in the corner (looking like it was straight out of a chemistry lab) that turned out to be a cold drip coffee device. Next to it was a smaller contraption with a burner underneath, which the owner explained was used to make “siphoned” coffee. I decided to go for the siphoned coffee and was quite impressed when the owner talked me through the entire process as he made it in front of me. Apparently you get alot more of a “pure” flavour through a siphon (I’ll leave that up to the coffee snobs to decipher).

I also went for their euro burger, which the waitress recommended. It was a good call as it had a juicy cut of pork belly (slow cooked for 4hrs apparently) combined with with sour kraut, fancy mustard in sour dough with a side of beer battered chips. Hats off to the chef it was damn good.

I walked out quite surprised, not expecting that sort of service/quality and setup. I guess it’s still the “honey moon” period but I’m hoping it’ll hold up. I’ll be making this a regular stop off on my ventures into Fyshwick – and come to think of it a good way to finish off a day’s motorbike ride on the weekend too!

Hope this helps any resident coffee nuts.
rony.

MWF, you know that tea is full of caffeine too? Sure, not as much as coffee, but if you think a nice cuppa isn’t going to make you blurt “caffeine loaded comments” you’re deluding yourself. SHUT UP AND GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE!! (winkey smiley smiley winkey etc)

Hi Jake555,

does anyone happen to own a SAECO Via Venezia

I have one of these machines. I bought it second-hand from a serious-looking German academic. With patience you can get a very good coffee from it. As I remember I found it was seen as desirable for having a boiler, not an aluminium block, and for its simple rugged construction at the modest price point. In my opinion it leaves any fully automatic domestic machine for dead – and I actually witnessed the slow death of a DeLonghi machine of the same vintage as the Saeco as it succumbed to its own complexity. It was owned by a friend who didn’t see the irony. I felt vindicated later in a coffee machine store as we sought a very expensive replacement. The owner believed the Saeco – the older Via Venezia you mention, with black switches, not the newer version with silver switches – was bulletproof and said that with a bit of care it will last ten years or more. Buying the Saeco made me aware of how much caffeinated swill I had poured down my throat over the years, and left me disinterested thereafter in the ‘which funky cafe does it best’ debates because I can, and often do, enjoy 80 to 90 per cent street-quality espresso at home.

In an attempt to expose him/her, I searched for posts where Holden Caulfield has had something to say. I won’t bore people with details, but have you commented on any Restaurant Review threads lately Holden Caulfield? What’s the difference between that and a coffee review thread?

You just had to be heard.

Not a coffee drinker?

Was that Crema Diction in Fyshwick?

You think Pellegrino’s is average…so do you consider a Maybach to be an average car?!?! There is no coffee for you in Fyshwick, bring your own freeze dried to work.

Noting that, as a new user, your comments are as valid as mine, I welcome your undoubtedly unbiased, passionate, defence of Pelligrinos coffee. However I think it is a little closer to a Passat up on bricks than than a Maybach

I don’t want to sound rude, but if you havent tried a seriously good coffee, you might think Pelligrinos is good, same as if you had only ever driven a VW Beetle, you might think they are as good as a Porsche. Do yourself a favour.Try a coffee from ONA in manuka, Grind in Kingston, or Crema Diction in Fyshwick.

Once you consider the price a Maybach is anything but special. Car analogy failed.

I don’t know about Pellegrino’s coffee but calling their food average would be charitable.

Pellegrinos is reasonable coffee, good and consistent, 8/10. Cosmorex is top notch 9.5/10. Yes I’m a coffee geek, 10/10 is way up there and for me a little different to most cafes.

#16 sammy yes the nespresso is convenient and ‘good’ coffee, with no fuss it will make a 7/10 cup of coffee every time, no matter what you do, but that is the downside as well – you cannot do anything to make it great coffee either.

#8 many people rave about them but I don’t think they’re really so crash hot.

Better than plunger or instant, probably fine for milk based drinks (I prefer short black or ristretto)

For the best portable coffee: also on thinkgeek is the Mypressi. Those things are awesome, my best coffee shot to date was on one (with my own roast at the peak 2-3 days old) They have a huge unpressurised basket, temperature is very good (with boiling water and a preheat rinse), and great pressure. They are actually quite forgiving to use as well, the dose and tamping is not as critical as other top notch (58mm basket, boiler/hx etc) machines and the enormous pressure in the cartridges means it’s very hard to choke = excellent ristrettos for making the best of mediocre beans.

With a hand grinder too, (there’s an awesome tiny kyocera one) then all you need is hot water and you’ll have coffee better than most cafes for well under $1 a go.

Thanks for the info. have tried Cosmorex before & not bad, but the Ona coffee at Crema Diction is much better. Also a nice place to chill out.
have my own grinder and Expobar machine at home, but like to escape the office for a coffee.

Oops – Corner of Gladstone & Kembla St (not Newcastle).

Thanks!!!!! For pointing me to the place on the corner of Gladstone & Newcastle St.

Great Coffee. The name of the place is Crema Diction. Real coffee – they use Ona – and made well. Also had a very nice pasta there. Coffee is also cheaper than most at $3.

canberratowie29:18 am 29 Jul 10

There is a little coffee shop on the corner of Kembla street and Gladstone street in the business called hang ups I go out of my way to get a coffee there it’s the nicest coffee I’ve ever had
I’ve been to several other coffee shops in Fyshwick and never really been wowed by them someone mentioned cafe e’cibo while the girl that makes the coffee is very nice and polite the coffee taste like hot mud !

For fyshwick – Industry Cafe on the corner of Barrier St & Ipswich St. I’ve only had 3 or 4 from there – 3 were great & 1 was average (depends who is making of course).

+1 re Pellegrinos being awful. Only had a few, but know they can’t get any better.

On a side note, does anyone happen to own a SAECO Via Venezia at home by any chance? At $500, 7 years ago, it’s still going strong & makes great coffee for a home unit. I struggle to find consistent good coffee anywhere but home these days….

There’s more to McCafe http://mcdonalds.com.au/#/mccafe

You may be VERY lucky and get to meet Ronald.

Detox yourself from the evil, evil coffee master and feel the freedom of tea.

I carry some decent Twinings tea bags in my purse, Earl Grey for arvo tea and a strong breakfast blend for morning meetings.

You drink Twinings… you really shouldn’t be talking about freedom then. They now manufacturer most of their teas for the non-UK market in China. Their packets say “Manufactured in UK or China” meaning unless you know the special code on the pack, you won’t realise where it comes from specifically. Their earl grey was changed in 2003 and no longer uses real Bergamot orange extract, its fake. They are one of the last major manufacturers not to support any fair-trade initiatives
If you’re going to be snobby about tea at least be discerning and choose an ethical brand more true to the traditions of tea making rather than a mass market product kept in business by inbred royals.

I pity you coffee slaves. You get all jittery and psycho 10 mins before a meeting. Then you all go to load up on your special coffee, bought, not made by yourselves. So then you make the meeting start late and then make stupid caffeine loaded comments and think you are special and funny and contributing. SHUT UP AND GET OUT!!! 😉 😉 🙂

Origin Kebabs at DFO uses Ona coffee beans, it’s pretty good much better than the other sludge you can get nearby.

Caffecibo at the Wetlands has good coffee (and burgers!)- the name is a bit misleading as it’s not really at the wetlands but at the DAS Fleet compound on Dairy Flat Road – I call that Fyshwick…

If you’ve got an office with both water and power, buy yourself a Nespresso machine. No lines, no travelling, and consistently good coffee. The pods work out at around a dollar a shot, there’s very little mess or cleanup, and if you’ve travelled to Europe recently, you’ll have noticed that *everyone* is using them, including the Italians.

Oh, and don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I’ve been full circle with coffee, including machines and grinders costing thousands, with my latest stop being an Aeropress and Bodum milk frother.

I was extremely skeptical about the Nespresso pod system, particularly after having tried the ESE (Easy Serve Espresso?) pod system that Illy was promoting about 5-10 years ago. The pods weren’t sealed like the Nespresso pods are, so they staled very quickly.

I visited a friend one day and noticed they’d purchased a Nespresso system. I mocked them about their purchase, and then proceeded to investigate the product further with the intention of validating my mocking. Imagine my surprise when it turned out what was likely one of the best short blacks i’ve ever consumed.

Pellegrino’s and Plumb are owned by the same gentleman.

And he is a gentleman.

+1 … I’ve given them way too many chances.
very average
However the Turkish place just a little further along Wollongong St does good coffee & would have to be THE cleanest take-away in Canberra.

Maccas.

Cosmorex have a cafe that does decent coffee..

The cafe across the road from hardly normal does ok coffee, nothing flash.

ill 2nd plumb, only had one but it was good..

but yes by and large most places in Canberra cant make decent coffee to save themselves, I tend to make my own using this

http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/8e3a/

It isnt the greatest but considering I am not paying $3-5 per cup its worth it.

CanberraCreative2:25 pm 28 Jul 10

Plumb on Tennant, near Collie St intersection always had great coffee. Haven’t been in Fyshwick for a long time so should still be good. The lines were long enough. Also, very nice pastries and friands to go with.

About 5 minutes from Fyshwick is Kingston Grind so depending on how desperate you are for a brew, they have the best in town.

The flat white I had at Freedom was OK.

The flute

Drive to Kingston (Kingston Grind)

I don’t about coffee, but The Flute on Barrier St is a pretty decent cafe.

I do but… the line is long enough as it is every morning.
