Colbert: Lies, damn lies then there are statistics

By BeyondThought - 14 July 2007 10

just recovered from allegations she had “given up” campaigning natalie colbert seems to have got back onto her feet by incorrectly quoting unemployment figures.

there is an unemployment rate of 3.1% in amongst us locals (abs6202: jun 07, see page 16) but colbert has knocked a bit off and says its only about 2.5% in today’s press release. rather than quote the trusty old ABS figures she’s using DEWR figures from the good people who gave us WorkChoices. odd thing is even the DEWR paper (see page 9) says unemployment is 3.3%

as they say, there are lies, damn lies then there are statistics (or something like that)

What’s Your opinion?

Come on Kramer, say what you like about Howard and Co, but do you really believe an etire PS department is fudging figures? Why is DEWR any less reliable than the ABS? Surely the department which manages employment in Australia has a pretty good idea what the real figures are?!

Hi Nat – great to see you on RiotACT. Nice comeback! I find it interesting that you source your figures from a DEWR publication instead of a more impartial source like the ABS?

Hi all, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify this issue and point out that someone has made incorrect presentation of the facts.

My media release clearly identifies the figure of 2.56 is for the Canberra electorate – not the entire ACT which is higher. I clearly stated “unemployment in the Canberra electorate has dropped to a record low 2.56%,” perhaps someone didn’t understand the difference between Canberra, the ACT and the Canberra electorate?

This data is clearly available in the March quarter 2007 Small Area Labour Markets publication report, and I invite you to check the facts out yourself – I am happy to send anyone a copy – or it can be found at http://www.workplace.gov.au/salm

I would be happy to discuss this issue with anyone interested – feel free to e-mail me at natalie@nataliecolbert.com.au.

Thanks,

Looks like Natalie’s campaigning is getting under Annette’s skin. The Labor aparatchiks are out in force to criticise her at every opportunity. Pity they can’t find something credible to raise ….

Stoopid apostrophe – that’s Australians

Of course unemployment looks low if you fudge the figures – since 2001 Australian’s have not been counted as unemployed if they work more than one hour a week.

By comparison, many European countries count unemployment as working less than 10 hours per week.

Yes the economy is healthy but given the rivers of cash flowing into this country from China, Paris Hilton could be running the show and turning a profit.

Who cares? Just sounds like another whine from the Canberra Labor Soviets.

Damn that evil John Howard and his WorkChoices, creating jobs for people, keeping wage price inflation down, getting the long term unemployed back in the workforce, and bludgers off welfare!!

andy 9:48 am 14 Jul 07

Of course.. one needs to consider that DEWR will spin the statistics appropriately, and I beleive they class anyone as working more than 10 hours as working a full time job.
