Franchise.net have a story on Canberra’s third Cold Rock franchise opening in Belconnen.

The franchise is owned by husband and wife team Guy and Karen Randell and business partner Michael Unwin.

“We fell in love with the concept of Cold Rock because it appeals to today’s consumer who is looking for things that are new and unique and which they can customise,” Guy Randell said.

“Belconnen is one of Canberra’s largest and most exciting urban areas given its continued growth, and we think this store is a great fit for the area.”

I keep misreading this as Cock Rock and think that The Darkness are going to play at The Lighthouse.

That would be AWESOME.

Airbourne would be better…

You know what would be even better? Nothing at all

As for Cold Rock… I can’t imagine there being much out there better than Gelatissimo’s “Chocolate Sorbet”, no matter how many different cheap lollies you “smash” in to it.

Being such a warm day yesterday, i went into Rubees and was surprised to see they serve laksa now. Due to the tropical heat, I instead had a concrete. Its pretty weird seeing laksa on the menu, like going to the Dickson Noodle House and seeing soft serve frozen custard on their menu between the fish cakes and laksa.

21st century Oz.

Belconnen wasn’t exactly doing a roaring trade when I walked past this morning. Something tells me opening an icecream shop in the middle of a Canberra winter is not the best timing.

That “something” would be common sense.

Had a cold rock for the first time on the weekend. Bought myself and Mrs Blowers a small cup of ice-cream each.. total cost = over $12.00!
Went to Woolies last night and happy to buy a medium size tub of ice-cream at the same quality for about $9.00 and we can have a couple of scoops every night for the week.

Over-rated and Very Over Priced. Don’t get sucked into thinking its higher quality ice cream than anything else in the malls. Shame really..

I feel the same way… they take average ice cream and smash some lollies into it. It’s hardly exciting or worth the price. I’d much rather any of the other varieties of ice cream on offer.

I was at Rubees on Friday night and discovered that they are expanding their menu into questionable territory, perhaps in response to Cold Rock appearing down the street. Fancy a steak or schnitty? Rubees has you covered with their lunch/dinner menu.

I can’t imagine who would want to try and have a sit-down steak dinner in an icecream bar.

Man, you people need to get out of Canberra more. Cold Rock has been around (and very successful) in other (admittedly warmer at this time of year) for ages now. As kezzafezza said, yeah it’s expensive and you could do it a lot cheaper at home, but the same could be said of most takeaway food/restaurants around.

Frozen custard from Goodberry’s and Rubee’s tastes weird and you are all lesser people for eating it.

I first came across it many years ago in Qld. It was overpriced then, too.

Erindale Cold Rock = five bucks for half a scoop of ice cream in a cup. Very stingy.

Goodberry’s beats it hands down.

That’s not just Erindale Cold Rock – that’s every Cold Rock. Ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

Agreed. My husband and I buy a tub of ice-cream from the supermarket and mash up our own mix of m&m’s and freckles, or whatever we fancy putting in. For what 2 ice-creams from Cold Rock cost, I can make 20 myself at home

Cold Rock couldn’t be further from Goodberry’s (and spin offs). Goodberry’s was frozen custard blended with a variety of mix-ins. Cold Rock is ice cream with stuff “smashed” into it on a cold slab.

I take it this was intended as a joke…

Me too. Any ice cream is basically frozen custard ie milk, sugar and eggs heated together until they thicken. I always wondered why Goodberrys felt they had to state that. It’s a bit like a fish and chip shop trying to be special by advertising “deep fried potato sticks”.

I really enjoy Goodberrys/Rubees, but only have it a couple of times a year. I could easily go and pick some up once a week, but I enjoy it more in moderation.

I tried Cold Rock at Erindale one day.. VERY underwhelming and nothing like Goodberrys. Sure, having things smashed into your icecream looks kinda cool, but I found the product underwhelming and the price fairly ridiculous. You could get a large concrete @ Goodberry’s or one of those 1L tubs of premium icecream from the supermarket for the same price as a tiny tub of Cold Rock.

Whilst I would have thought that opening an ice cream business at the start of winter wasn’t the best of timing, the queue out the door at Goodberries last night in 3 degrees would appear to suggest otherwise.

…so is this just another rebadge for Rubees (/Goodberry’s)? or an all new store?

Are you the same Cameron from Goodberry’s Belco?

Ahhhh, that explains the rather cryptic half-covered sign I saw the other day. The only part I could see showed the words “cold ice-cream”, which I thought was a somewhat necessary characteristic OF ice-cream.

It is next to Nandos in the new Lathlain street frontage of Westfield. I give Rubees 6 months before they fold, and Cold Rock 18 months before the masses realise it is a completely underwhelming form of icecream.

Cold Rock is great, once a year, when you’re holidaying somewhere other than Canberra. Ditto Krispy Kreme.

…oh Google tells me it is in the Mall, facing out to the Police Station (Lathlain Street)…

…so is this just another rebadge for Rubees (/Goodberry’s)? or an all new store?
