Commissioner announces community forums on ACT tree management and urban forest renewal investigation

This has been a major issue for many people in Canberra over recent months, since the announcement by the NCA and TAMS that many thousands of the town’s street trees would need replacement over a relatively short timeframe. Perceived lack of communication about other tree removals in parks and public places has contributed to the groundswell of community sentiment on the issue.

Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment Maxine Cooper has asked me to be one of two community representatives on a Reference Panel that will work with the Commissioner during her investigation. The website has details on all the Reference Panel members and the Terms of Reference for the investigation.

I welcome feedback and thoughts from RA-folk either here or via urbanforest@gcc.asn.au and look forward to seeing a good turn-out at the upcoming forums.

I was woken up on the morning of 2 Feb before 6am by a chainsaw and chipper cutting down some trees along Lathlain Street (I live nearby).

Perhaps the trees needed to be cut due to spacing, lack of water, safety, etc, but why would they need to cut down the trees under the cover of darkness?

I mean, using a chainsaw before 6am?!?!?! Dammit!!!
