A 20-year-old man was arrested by police for dangerous driving and other traffic-related offences following a pursuit in North Canberra on Friday night (December 29).

Police will allege around 7.40pm on Friday, the man was driving a white Holden utility on Ellenborough Street in Kaleen and accelerated away when he saw a police vehicle.

A pursuit commenced, which continued along the Barton Highway and Federal Highway, and stopped near the off ramp to Horse Park Drive. The pursuit lasted a total of four minutes and reached a maximum speed of 145km/hr.

Around 4.45pm yesterday (Saturday, December 30), police attended a house on Majura Road after an off-duty member spotted the Holden utility at the location. Police spoke with the man, who initially stated someone else drove the vehicle on Friday, but was unable to provide any details of this person other than a first name.

Further inconsistencies in the man’s story led police to arrest the man for dangerous driving, and he admitted to being the driver involved in the pursuit on Friday.

He was taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with dangerous driving, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, driving with a suspended licence and stating false information to police.

He was bailed from the ACT Watch House, and will face the ACT Magistrates Court on January 12.

Has Canberra decided to alter its calendar over the x-mas break, first the thisisnotcharity lady and now ACT police who can’t get the day and date aligned correctly.

The White Holden Commodore ute is the white commodore of white commodores… I didn’t notice a resist arrest or other crime for evading Police? WT?

Tortue them until they’re dead!

(Feels like another RiotACT year comin’ up…)

According to the dictionary, la Tortue is the French name for Tortuga, an island owned by Haiti. Let them take their crappy utes there and see how they get on. (First totally egotistical correction of 2012. It feels GOOD, I tell you. )

I prefer some of the options suggested from the Urban Dictionary for “turtle” 🙂

Love your work poetix.

Time for a law and order party to get a few seats in the election and change the laws so that scum like this are punished properly, not just given a pathetic suspended sentence.

Very well played. That’s exactly what I was referring to. I’m impressed you pieced the puzzle together.

😉

As a second step I’d go with Fining the hell out of them again plus making them watch their car getting crushed. With no chance to get anything out of it apart from any personal documents. Stereo, tools or other effects in the car at the time would be crushed along with it. Then banned from owning a car for a period of time.

If they get another car or drive another car during that period, then its jail time (not to mention the crushing, regardless if the car was theirs or not). Doubt that someone who ended up getting their mates brand new ute crushed is going to have many friends.

Awesome – good on the off-duty copper too. Just goes to show that justice never sleeps!

Very simple to fix unlicensed/unregistered drivers. First time they do it fine the s*** out of them. Any subsequent offences, go straight to jail, no ifs or buts. They have clearly demonstrated their unwillingness to comply with the most basic requirements for driving, and that suspensions have no impact on them.

First finger-wagging of the new year?

A pleasing start for the law. Good work. We should be like NSW who have a specific act against drivers who cause a pursuit to be initiated.
