Commonwealth Park is set for a $500,000 upgrade after the National Capital Authority announced funding to “spruce up” the park and its facilities.

NCA Chief Executive Sally Barnes said the three-year project will include an array of improvements from outdoor furniture and the precinct’s toilets to upgrades to the irrigation system.

As well as undertaking maintenance and upgrades, the NCA said it will take a broader look at not only what is currently in Commonwealth Park, but also look at upgrades that might lure more events to the park.

Ms Barnes said the makeover would also enhance the Stage 88 precinct to improve visitors’ experience and will work with the ACT Government to ensure that the upgrades to Commonwealth Park fit in with Floriade.

“We are looking at the current infrastructure within the park with third-party events in mind, so that larger events can continue to be held in Commonwealth Park without compromising the sustainability and environmental considerations of the park,” Ms Barnes said.

“We’re looking forward to working with event coordinators and receiving community feedback on the types of infrastructure and amenity improvements they would like to see.”

Ms Barnes said the NCA will work in consultation with organisers that hold events in Commonwealth Park to ensure the makeover enhances the park’s usability.

The NCA is also looking at safety and convenience of the footpaths in the park with its different users and Ms Barnes said the NCA will consult with Pedal Power on how cyclists use the pathways.

The ACT’s cycling lobby group recently called on the Government to build separated cycleways for pedestrians and cyclists on the busiest sections of the shared paths around Lake Burley Griffin.
